    Default HP Microserver

    Hi guys
Am looking at buying one of these in a few weeks.
I know loads of you have them on here what I would like to know is this.
I've already got a 4tb USB 3 drive almost full of media and if I buy the server and a few small drives to start off can I still run the usb3 drive via the server at the same time?
Also how easy is plex to set up on one of these micro servers?
Finally would £137 sound about right for one of these delivered??

    Thanks in advance.

The drive should run fine and just show up as another disk, plex is dead simple to set up just direct it to your media.

If you want to set up shares via plex server there is a tutorial somewhere that Dejavu made for people.

I'm not sure of price sounds about right, is that with cash back?

    Thanks to Ashley

There is no mention of cash back and that is direct from HP so comes with no drives either but I plan to pick up maybe a 1tb and either a small SSD for the OS or have the OS on a flash stick if that would work.

The price is fine. I would buy 3TB WD Red drives to populate it as you will regret not doing this in the future. I believe they are down to £90 at ebuyer. Also I think if you use drive pooling you don't need to populate a raid array straight away so you can have a 3 to drive now and then add them as you need them. I haven't tried pooling before so someone else will be able to comment on this. I like to have redundancy on my drives so use raid 5, you can do the same with pooling (I think!).

You can use the USB3 drive but bear in mind that the server only has USB 2 ports. I bought a USB3 card off ebay for around £15.

The greens suffer from a problem with them dying after too many spin downs and spin ups. You can override this with the wdidle tool so they never spin down. The reds are designed for nas use and don't suffer from this issue although I've heard the 4tb reds do. I've got a mixture of reds and greens in my drobo, all of the greens have had the wdidle treatment and none have failed yet.

As usual, some really sound advice from the lads here. I not sure why, but I'm still to own one of these.
Still trying to work out the attraction. Only thing pulling me towards one is power consumption.

    Hi m8
I had two green wd drives and two reds, both greens failed after a short time but the reds give no issue. The greens are also much noisier than reds. If I were u I would buy one less drive for now and with money saved buy reds instead of greens

Yep about right but u need 3 reds for a decent raid for redundancy (RAID5) if you got 2 then you can only mirror and that means losing 1/2 ur space. where as 3 means you will have 5.45TB of piece of mind storage ;-)

OS wise I am running windows Home Server 2011

    Thanks to akimba

CCTV, 3 cameras at 1920x1080 at 25fps will use 4tb for 2 weeks of storage !!

Os will run on the 250gb and once get the funds the 9tb of reds will be for media and might raid them but only really have about 1tb of stuff that i would class as important rest can always be downloaded again etc

    Thanks to Mobileman
