    Default Couch to 5k

Thought I'd pop back in, after I lost time to do my blog, and lost time to do my progress journal too.

Anyway, I'm 4.5 stone now from when I first started doing something about my weight in July 2012.

I've recently gone into Couch to 5K program, it's an NHS ran 9 week program, for people who don't run, to running 5k.

I'm still a heft size, and running was always a no no for me.

I'm currently one run left this week for ending of week 7! I've made amazing progress.

    Anyone else done this?

Once I can consistently run 5K, I'll train for the 10K which I hope to do for Manchester next year.

Well done mate. If you don't mind me asking how much did you weigh when you started and how old are you? I'm thinking of doing the same but going the cycling/swimming route.

I was a few lbs under 25 stone at my heaviest in 2012.

I also looked at the cycling route, but the cost of a decent bike and the fact I'm still 19.5 stone and 6'6 really put me off.

I seem to be OK with running it's a great program for the earlier stages, now it's all 5 min walk and then a run, 3 times a week, so my own music suffices.

I'd encourage anyone to get involved.

After many years crawling around office floors pulling in cable my knees are shot so I would like to avoid the high impact running route. I don't even know how much I weigh at the moment, no scales in the house. I'm guessing 18-19 stone. Its waist size I notice, I'm a 38 waist and I used to be 34. I've just serviced the bike but would like a program similar to Couch to 5K to follow.

MHP, I suppose the ethos is the same for biking as it is for running.
    Warm up
    Do a bit
    Do a bit more

    Repeat until goal met.

There's a load of C25K apps, some with GPS tracking so I would think it tracks you for a time or distance and then prompts you to change speed etc. Should work for a bike as much as running.

Not heard of C25K before so thanks for the info BB. Would never had gone looking for this kind of thing either. Already d/l an android app for my phone so might give this a whirl.

My feet burn like fook when I run so I slink off and to the cross trainer. Much less impact so I can cover a better distance before my feet conk out. Will need to a get a new proper pair of trainers methinks.

    Holiday first tho'.

You can get riding programs buddy. Doesn't have to be running. Although I've a partially disclosed knee cap and with good trainers, socks and treadmill you should be OK.

Great effort mate. Stick to it, you will realise your goals. Just remember to enjoy it though.

Thanks mate, although I finished the 3rd run yesterday, I couldn't resist a 20 minute run today, felt really strong. One thing I never realised was so important all those years ago is getting your diet right pre workout. If you jump in to soon without eating right, you'll be punished.

I've learnt that myself recently. Pre exercise food is vital and make sure it's the right food

Well just an update. I finished the 9 week program today. Ran my first 5K. Time wasn't my concern to be honest just wanted to keep steady pace and not complete it. So yeah 6'6, 22.5 stone. Never ran in my life, and first 5K done. I'd encourage anyone thinking of getting into running to give it a go.

Keep going BB, it'll come. Through exercise mainly I've dropped 3 jeans sizes and a as of yesterday I have lost a tiny bit under 5 stone. 21 stone 2 down to 16 stone 3. It's all worth it in the end.

I want to do this too. Started a new job and most of my new work colleagues are doing the 10k Manchester run next month... A select few are doing the Athens marathon in October (Mental cases lol)

At the moment i'm 19.5 stone at 6ft 1in and 40 in 2 weeks.. Only exercise I get a the moment is walking the dogs. (Not including work)

Mainly eat fruit for breakfast and a salad or chicken for Lunch. (Salad is from Morrison's not really healthy with the pasta sauce's etc but better than McDonald's. Plus cut down the portion from a large salad to a medium salad.)

Dinner (Tea time for us notherners) is normally what ever the wife has made... So basically crap

Gonna get myself some decent running shoes (a shop near me does a proper measurement of your running style etc and makes the shoe to your feet) and start trying to run to get fit enough to do the 10k Manchester next year.

Also going to start playing football again with work so really want to get my arse in gear...

Thanks Malty. Weight has fallen off. Going to mix running with some biking too as well. Hoping to do 10k next year but long time from that yet

Nice one AD, meal prep is the biggest and probably is 70 percent of you're whole diet/routine. Get your right and you'll benefit the most from that.

Great result! I did the Manchester 10k a few years ago brilliant day. I've started back losing weight this week but I've gone with that insanity program as i knew someone who did it. I have a mate who has gone from not running at all to training for a marathon this year. He's not enjoying it but determined to complete it. He absolutely swears by running now as a way to keep his weight off.

I did this about 18 months ago. I went from 17 stone to 15 and a half. There were a couple of weeks when I was close to puking but now I can do 5k fairly comfortably. I got given a motorised treadmill a while back. I set it to 7.5 km/h and off I go. With warm up and down I'm done in 35 minutes. Keep it up mate.
