    Photos Hoverfly

Not much in the garden due to the weather being less than helpful, except for the occasional hoverfly and bee. Couldn't get a BIF, so had to settle for this hover.

Colours are pretty spectac, your macros are always great. Do you take all of these handheld?

Since the beginning of August, yes, some of (but certainly not all) such as this are handheld, though I do still use a tripod if I choose to m8.

I'm still practicing macro but really struggle to get any bugs in focus handheld. Any tips?

Hold your breath when you're pressing the shutter. Rock back and forth slightly until you get the focus right. And remember its in focus as far in front as it is behind from the focal point - which is almost nothing anyway!

    And practice makes perfect m8.

Best tip ever rocking back and forth.. leave the focus ring alone.. A monopod can help as you can rock that too.

A tripods little use unless its a slow bug or you have a focusing rack.Pick a bright day when you can decrease the aperture and increase the depth of field..

    then you're on your own.

Oh one last thing make sure the dioptre setting is right as without AF it's all down to that... I wear glasses for reading and keep them on for focusing the camera

Mind you all the theory in the world is useless without practice and the great shots our DF macro-ists turn in are the best incentive to keep on doing just that.

Oh and the hoverfly mate.. splendid is the word i use to describe it..

Holy shit, that little fucking wheel next to my viewfinder has a function. I've been idly twiddling it to see if my shots change, without any thought as it what is was. So this is why even when rocking I struggle to find the focus point? Sheyut son. Thanks.
