Info HAYDOCK SPRINT CUP TRENDS 2014

The Betfred Sprint Cup takes place at Haydock on Saturday 6th September. It’s a six-furlong group 1 open to horses aged 3 and above. Good recent form in a group 1 sprint has proven crucial to finding the winner of this in recent renewals.

Below we take a look at the trends for the past 10 years:

    Age (Win-Place-Runners)

    3yo: 3-2-32

    4yo: 2-11-46

    5yo: 4-2-27

    6yo+: 1-5-40

All 3 winners aged 3 ran in Prix Maurice de Gheest on previous start.

All 5 winners aged 5+ ran in the King’s Stand or Diamond Jubilee earlier that year.

Only 2 horses aged older than 5 have managed to win this in past 30 years.

    Breeding

8 of 10 winners were sired by group 1 winners over 1M or shorter

8 of 10 winners were by a sire with a stamina index of 6.7F to 8.8F

    5 of 10 winners were by a sire that won a group 1 over 5F to 7F

3 of other 5 winners were by a sire that finished 1st or 2nd in the QEII

    Gender

Fillies/mares (2-3-17) have done well in this group 1, gaining 2 wins and filling a sixth of the places from just under 12% of the total runners.

    Recent/Past Form

7 of 10 winners finished in first 3 last time out

10 of 10 winners had run at least twice that season

9 of 10 winners achieved an RPR of 116+ in last 2 starts

8 of 10 winners had finished in the first 3 in a group 1 in past 2 starts

9 of 10 winner had won a listed race or higher (exception was 2nd in a group 1)

9 of 10 winners had won over 6F or 7F (exception won Nunthorpe on previous start)

Since 2000 the 6 French-trained runners have produced 2 winners and 1 second, 2 of 3 unplaced runners were priced bigger than 16/1.

horses drawn top 5 stalls: 3-7-45

No strong trends on the draw.

6 of 10 winners were priced between 9/1 and 14/1

No very strong trend on prices, though 14/1 has been long priced winner since 2004.
