    Default Diesel CR tuning

I have a 2007 Saab 9-3 convertible (150hp model) which I've had a few months and am happy with it.

Been looking into these common rail mods such as this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Chip-tunin...item460d73bd2a

They seem to state up to 20% more fuel effiency and quite an increase in power. Are these safe to use? Anyone got any real world experiences of these boxes and their performance (both fuel saving and speed).

I have a Skoda Fabia derv VRS PD engine with a generic Jabbasport remap, best thing I've ever done, managed 76mpg once grannying along and on the other hand pull away from even the latest GTD Golfs.

I've also a CR 170 Passat and will mod that at some point.

Tuning box or dedicated map, get the brakes upgraded at the same time.

    Thanks to Chubbs

Well I bit the bullet. The Italianspeed product claims to take me from 150bhp to 202bhp which should be VERY noticeable. The fuel gains are claimed to be up to 21% so again thats a lot and should be instantly noticeable.

I'm not a fast driver. Loosing my license would mean I couldn't see one of my kids so I don't break the speed limit or take risks.

    Cheers guys.

Those are large gains, should be fun.

I forgot to add that I have told my insurance company.

    Sorry for the delay

I'm sure they have, Admiral wouldn't touch the car because it's over a 25% rise in BHP.

What's the general consensus on telling insurance co's? Do most of you do it or hope they don't check or remove device/remap?

those that have done any of these alterations and told your insurance co what sort of increase in premium have you seen?

Not got a diesel just curious for the future

The thing I wanted to know is what happens if you buy a car that has been remaped or modiffied but your not told and you have an accident and they then find out its been remaped/modiffied?

Certainly made a difference. Fuel consumption has gone from ~38mpg to 44mpg and I'm driving more aggressively now. Power is definately up but I don't really think it's >200bhp. It has a few settings on the box and I contacted the manufacturers. I've altered it now to be even more fuel efficient. Fingers crossed I'll get even MORE mpg

That's off the computer but I've only filled up twice since fitting and usually I fill once every 8 or 9 days. First full tank gave me about 100 miles on top of normal though and I think that's about right.

@EvilBob : If you do ever have problems with the engine in the future, make sure to tell the garage about the device and show them how to disable it. I know of a 1 series owned by a famous DJ that had about £3500 of parts thrown at it by a BMW dealer and a specialist. After I put the car back to stock and updated it, all problems vanished.

@ss30 : If you scratch your own bumper on a post, I really can't imagine anyone caring. On the other hand if you were one of the front cars in a massive pile up maybe they would check. Would need an insider like BigBrand to confirm this, but I've always thought it daft to pay heaps of money for insurance which you know you might not be able to claim on in the future.

Interesting thing is what would happen if the car had been chipped by the previous owner and you honestly had no idea? (Like the 1 series I mentioned above).
