Default question re COA purchased refurb laptop from retailer

    yo gang,

bought a toshiba c50 i3 laptop off ebay very cheap from a large nationwide retailers outlet store now it comes with windows 8.1 which i have proceeded to take straight off

these have been refurbed by a company on there behalf, now i would have thought they have to supply each laptop with a COA or am i mistaken ?

back in the day i worked for a company that got fined by MS for not supplying them wondered if this had changed ??

by way was £220 as i had £20 ebay voucher for i3, 4gb, 1tb i3 2.4ghz 3rd gen not bad for replacing my trusty 7 year old tosh a100

windows 8 is linked to the bios.
No need for COA as windows will flag up automatically if it is (or not) genuine when connected to the web if it's attached to the correct machine.

The refurrb company will just restore it. As long as you don't remove the recovery partition you'll be fine if you ever want to sell it on.

on another note I hated windows 8 at the start but now have 8.1 on all my machines. It's very, very quick and slick.

Preinstalled versions of Windows 8, using UEFI and Secure Boot are an absolute load of shit anyway. Got rid of that bullshit on 3 laptops I own straight away. Hate it with a vengeance. Old school BIOS/MBR is the the way to go IMO.

I have to say I have no experience with 8/8.1, but are you sure about that?

Win 7, Vista, even XP could be linked with BIOS so major OEMS could distribute media that would install and check BIOS rather than looking for license codes, but a CoA was always needed.

Otherwise I could have bought say a Dell or HP with Linux so no Windows license would ever be issued, then just install from CD/DVD and claim it must be legal because the BIOS let me do it. On that logic, it could be argued that Win7 installed using modded BIOS with SLIC 2.1 tables would then be legit.

Microsoft's On-line Activation v3 meant manufacturers were required to write a unique Windows product key into the BIOS of each new PC they shipped, which was linked to that specific computer's mobo.

If you bought a copy of windows 8 you'd get a COA but machines pre-loaded with windows 8 just come with a small windows 8 genuine product sticker on the bottom.

The fresh Installs on two I did picked up the key in the BIOS

I grabbed an all in one iso and used the core edition
