    Default The tax man visits

So just had a lovely letter saying I've not paid enough tax last year. Now down the side it does say if you think your company fucked up they pay and if hmrc fucked up then they pay - why are they asking me for money then? Company has all my details theres no tax credits or anything like that involved all very vanilla so how can they have screwed this up?

on the up side I can pay over 3 years if i want... (If I have to)

Circumstances changed mid-year and no-one informed the revenue office?
It's more likely your tax code changed last year for some reason and nothing was done about it til this year.

If you're PAYE, take the letter to the HR department at your company and get them to deal with it. You'll probably end up paying slightly more income tax spread over the year, but much better than the lump sum.
HMRC are pretty useless since tax credits were introduced/adjusted - award for the year no matter if circumstances change, claw back money the following year. Dumb really.

    Hi
Or undeclared benefit in kind? You have company car or private health or any perks?
    Do you get P11D?

Private health but thats declared and other deduction mentioned as "benefit in kind". Did change jobs part way through the year which may have done it. Still think there's something fishy as I got a decent pay rise (25%) and my pay def didn't go up that much (even taking into account tax).

personally I thought I'd overpaid and would get a refund due to the salary not changing much.

    Hi
Wonder if large pay increase put you up into the 40% tax band?

Private health is estimated in your coding and would have updated based on the p11d submitted July ish, if the actual was more than estimated you'd have an underpayment, potentially 40% tax could also impact if the rise took you over the threshold. Also when you changed jobs did both pay you in the same month giving you 2 lots of the free pay allowance?
