    Default Should Scotland be independent?

We have a few Scots on the forum so thought I'd ask what the feeling is up in Scotland?

We'll miss you if you go, the Union Jack will look shit without you.

I voted yes. I'm a Londoner and part of me wants to keep the union together, however I see this as much bigger issue. With the rise of UKIP and the general unhappiness amongst UK citizens in how we are governed, the Scottish referendum seems to be a catalyst for the general hatred and distrust we have towards the politicians of Westminster. If Scotland votes yes then the game could well be up for Cameron, Clegg and Millipede and the general malaise the big three parties have spoon fed us for decades.

Needs to happen for two reasons. As a social experiment and to teach Salmond that he is a numb cunt with no real idea what position his beloved country will be in a couple of years later. I honestly don't think that the countries inhabitants have the balls or gall to go it alone though.

Most Englishmen want Scotland to be out of our hands, I think it should have happened years ago.

and northern Ireland too make it its own country in its own right, governing themselves. we have no right to go into anyones country and take a large slice and dictate to them what to do.

i have voted for no, i also think that a lot of the people in scotland who will go for the yes vote havent taken into account what difference it will make by making the yes vote, its more fueled by their dislike for england, but it aint up to me i think the people of scotland will miss being part of a united kingdom than the vice versa if they get their independence, maybe not straight away but 5 years or 10 years down the line when some things they think they are being promised now will not be delivered...........but thats all politicians for you..............cunts!

I predict that if the Scots were to leave, we would be the losers and by that I mean hard, working class people. As Parliament swings towards the right (after all the leftwing Scottish MPs have departed), we will be in the iron clad grip of the fucking Tories which means yet more wage deflation, fewer public services and the kind of dog eat dog world that they love to preside over. Meanwhile the Scots will create their socialist utopia without the distraction of costly wars, huge defence spending etc..

I personally think they would do pretty well without us.

I agree, in fact if I was a conspiracy theorist I might think that infiltrating the unions & Scottish independence should be tory policy.

I will look forward to independence for the north east next

Part of me wants to turn around and say, well go for it if you think you're hard enough, but the other side of me is protection against our Union. I suppose from a selfish point of view, will this impact me in my lifetime, my kids and grandkids, yes probably will. But is there enough to say this decision alone is more significant than the utter greedy, filthy, lying cheating twats in Westminster currently? I'm not sure it out ways it.

I don't care to be honest it's up to them but the old saying is many hands make light work meaning better to stick together as a country.

Let Scotland look after their own affairs and keep English parliament out of anything that does not concern the English.

They'd be foolish to leave. There appears to be an almost head in the sand attitude to revenue, taxes, spending and oil and energy.

Oil and gas will run out at some stage be it 15 years or 60 years. Revenue from that will fluctuate during that time so public income streams will be changing at the whim of OPEC.

Scottish parliament not Westminster decide where they spend the money in the NHS (granted it's given by Westminster) but the scots can spend it how they like. So no different from if they were independent.

I don't know what the various other sectors of industry contribute to scottish GDP but i think oil and gas represent about 10%. I guess financial services is another big sector, this could all change if nobody knows what currenct they will have in years to come.

They'll lose the trident base on the clyde, another huge employer.

Scotland would be forced by EU law to establish its own postal service.

Car registrations and number plates? Will Scotland pay the DVLA in Swansea to organise the admin or create an expensive new system of their own?

Britain has 191 embassies and high commissions across the world. It would costs millions for an independent Scotland to try and establish even a tenth of this representation. So if a Scottish citizen gets into trouble overseas will they be welcome at Britain’s embassies or will they be out on their ear?

Tourism is undoubtedly good earner but what energy sources do the Scots have when the national grid tells them to do one? the tourist industry will be up in arms if the best parts of the country are covered in wind turbines.

All the great sports people? Who funds them ? National lottery, where are most of the facilities, England. they will have to re-build all that infrastructure and put new funding in place.

I think it would be a real shame if they left but if that's what they want, then fair play but don't come back whinging if it all goes tits up.

If Thursday's vote does go with the yes camp, expect to see Harry Gration interviewing members of the YRA on Look North sometime soon. They can try and imitate our puddings, but they'll never take our freedom!

As a Yorkshireman I can empathise with the majority of Scots who may vote for independence with their heart rather than their head. I would love to see a devolved Yorkshire have more powers and control its own destiny as I feel proud to be from Yorkshire. I honestly I don't think that many other counties have the same ethos.. I have never heard anyone decry their alliance to the silver bear of Warwickshire or the Bustard of Wiltshire but in Yorkshire we really do love the white rose. I believe very strongly that Westminster is only interested in the south of England, investment in the capitol and any event within a 150 mile circumference of the M25.

With regards to the oil....we have been told since the hour it was discovered that it was/is running out. And its very true it IS running out, as we take the stuff out the ground then it is defacto running out ffs. Anyway I wanted to share a stolen quote from a DK forum member that made me laugh out loud -
Englishman...You Scots can't vote YES, you only have 40 years of oil left.
Scotsman... Fair enough, but you lot only have 4 days left of it.

I really thought that about sums it up. As for independence then whats to loose ? As far as everyone is concerned we "cost" the union money and will continue to do so far into the future. The Yes camp just want to be the kids that have grown up and now want to leave home...most parents would be proud. I think most sensible people must have worked out by now that Scotland does pay more into the coffers than it takes out AND it is forecast to continue that way for a bloody long time to come..........Otherwise why have we got the Westminster elite all joining hands and promising to sign treaties to hand us more powers/more cash/barnet formula to remain......feck me it looks as if they would drop to their knees if it would get them the No vote they are after.....WHY if it costs R-UK money ? Out of compassion ? Love ? Yeah right ok then we can discount those lol...and the Tory party ? They don't get many seats up here...1 last time. I think they did get 300,000 votes though so not as unpopular as made out....but meh they would do WELL politically in R-UK if labour lost all them Westminster seats. So why are the tories so hell bent on keeping it together ?
Me im a private cnut lol but I will openly say I am voting Yes.....because it is a chance for Scotland to change politics in the whole country for the better. It is fantastic to witness people voicing their aspirations and demands in public. This has spread south as well...(I am just back from a month in kent). People are saying "Oi what about US....We want a better deal too".
But as said I am voting Yes in the hope that in 2 years time we can then vote in a government that supports the aims and common goals of the majority of people up here. Their will be pain if we go it alone. Some people will loose their jobs......I also think more people will get jobs in the long run. My political view do not tie with the SNP and Salmond very well. We are not voting for him/them - we are voting a straight answer to a question - we will the decide our future in 2016 when we elect our government. The SNP are and always were (IMHO) a means to an end - In the end most people wanted the vote - a final lets get this done properly after the 1979 fiasco which left a lot of people VERY bloody bitter (There was a referendum in 1979 BTW lol). The only party that promised this chance to vote were the SNP - so with some left of center policies and labour party complacency they have destroyed the labour vote up here. It wasn't supposed to happen like that lol......Labour opened the can of worms by moving right.
Finally as a Yes voter can I just point out - My misses is English from Kent. Half my family are English born and I think I have as many English good friends as I have Scottish. No England/English hater here people !!
    Anyway enough of my ramblings.

Just out of interest, what does the percentage of Yes/No have to be? Surely it would have to be a much larger majority?
