We used Repel 55 ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pyramid-Repe.../dp/B000VRZ26Y ) when we were travelling round Mexico. It's pretty strong and you don't want to be putting it near any plastics as it melts the stuff (I have a melted cheap Casio watch as evidence). It's essential that you use the stuff at night too.

As for money we just used a few Thomas Cook / Travelex cards preloaded and used the cash machines.

    Thanks to stimpy

Tulum is nice, good coral reef there, wouldn't take a fishing rod though there. Loads of loud annoying yanks in Cancun. Xcaret is not far from Tulum either

I've used that repel anti mosquito stuff before and it works.
It melts plastic and discolours clothes, so god knows what it does to your skin.
I went to Mexico a few years ago and you'll definitely need it

    Thanks to ilscuro

I didn't even think to use repellant when I went last year and I was fine but that was in June. Cancun was fun if you like the party scene but other than that it's all shops.

halifax have a credit card called the clarity card. It allows you to spend money on it in any currency and you will not be charged a fee and you will get the proper exchange rate rather than a weighted rate like at any exchange. You can also withdraw cash on it at no charge but you will pay interest on cash withdrawals starting immediately. I use this card whenever buying anything in foreign currency as it guarantees it's the cheapest way to buy.

Also this is probably obvious advice to people who travel regularly but it was useful to me as I don't go on many holidays, don't buy excursions inside your hotel. We had a man who stood outside out hotel all day and he got us really good prices and all the bookings went smoothly.

If you can go to Coco Bongo, it's an amazing night out for people of all ages, might be a bit busy if you have children under say 12 though, they might get lost. Try to go there for a night rather than just part of a bar crawl and if you can get a VIP wristband it's worth it. I think I paid $80 for my wristband which gave us our own area and drinks all night. Tip the waiter well and he will look after you, I got carried away and tipped $90 in the end but I had massive trays full of cocktails coming to me all night and the space was filled with tequila shots. I was giving them away to chicas come the end as I was wasted, they use full strength spirits so watch out as after drinking at the hotel all day you think you have become He-Man, then you drink to the same pace with proper drinks and you end up wobbly to say the least...

Technically it's in North America so if you don't have that option then I think it will be 'other'.

Dollars are accepted for almost everything so just take pesos in small denominations for tips or smaller purchases. There are more Coco Bongos, if you are near Playa Del Carmen.

I'd be very surprised if that clarity card gave you the spot fx rate. What I do/have done is open an account with citibank, they allow you to have accounts in almost any currency. If you plan ahead and have a trading account they'll usually give you the spot rate less a couple of bips, withdraw the money to the currency account you want, assign the card to that account (important you do that) and you can just use cash machines.

Bit it of a faff and takes a couple days paying in/out but if you're changing a lot it can make a big difference.

quick check - it's the MasterCard set rate that they use so not going to be perfect but pretty good.
