Default Random modem disconnect monitoring software

    lo all,

i seem to be getting quite a few random disconnects on my broadband over the last couple of weeks and after router trys a few times pops back on, the usual first line support at sly tell me all is fine

is there some software i can run on pc leaving it on to monitor the disconnects and give me some numbers and supporting info after a week or so of monitoring then i can give them some hell

im suspecting noise on the lin is causing it but as usual whenever its checked its fine

Knock up a simple batch file script to ping an external IP address every 10 seconds? And log the pings to a text file?

Are you connected to the master socket? If so take the faceplate off and try connecting to the test socket using another filter and DSL cable. This may disconnect the rest of your telephone points depending how it's wired up. That will test if your internal wiring is at fault. If the problem persists then it is the router or external line. What router are you using? I hate sky routers although the newer ones have a much more responsive web interface, the older grey ones are a nightmare.

Has the router got the option to output a syslog, should give you more info than just pings

    Thanks to hoponbaby

Quite a few people with the problem in this thread at Netgear:

    http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread.php?t=47333

Maybe the PSU is on it's way out as my Netgear routers started to play up when the PSUs started to die? I had to do capacitor replacements on one as well to sort that out as they don't last forever.

good thread that certainly could be that, probably why only paid £60 on ebay for it three years ago when in shops at over £100

mate has one spare (bought at same time but he on fibre now) so going to run his router for the next week or so with his power supply and see if get same problems
if not will have to use the cough cough sly router thats never been out its box other than to rip the info out settings !

if not find a decent router as not a fan of the sly ones seem to be even worse from my experiences
