They've been on about it for years and years....Bill Murray has been in and out, then in then out; and one of the original Ghostbusters is now dead. Plus they've just announced that it'll have a female cast.

I just wish they'd leave it alone and move on!

Ghostbusters 3 is seemingly dead, as Paul Feig drops more details on his female-headlined Ghostbusters reboot...

Yesterday, writer and director (and Freaks And Geeks creator) Paul Feig confirmed on his Twitter account that yep, he was officially working on a new Ghostbusters film. He's set to direct it, and is co-writing the script with Katie Dippold, who penned The Heat (which Feig also directed).

A new interview with Entertainment Weekly has thrown a bit more light on the news too, and for starters, it looks like the long-planned Ghostbusters 3 that Dan Aykroyd and others have been working on for years is a dead project. Feig's film is a reboot of Ghostbusters, which will be led by women.

Feig revealed to EW that he'd been contacted by Sony and Ivan Reitman - who had been set to direct Ghostbusters 3 - a few months back to sound him out about making the film. Back then, it was the mooted Ghostbusters 3 that he was being asked about, but he didn't want to do it. "How do you do it and not screw it up?" he not unfairly asked.

And that's when he put the suggestion forward: "what if it was an all female cast?". It unlocked the project for Feig. "And then I thought, well, what if we just make it new? It’s not coming into the world that existed before. It’s always hard if the world has gone through this big ghost attack, how do you do it again? I wanted to come into our world where there’s talk of ghosts but they’re not really credible, and so what would happen in our world if this happened today?".

In short, this is a total reboot. For fear of ruining the memory of the original, Feig is going to "restart it because then we can have new dynamics". That doesn't rule out cameos from the previous case, "it would just be in different roles now".
Furthermore, "we want to have fun with giving nods to what came before".

So where's the project up to? Confirming it's an origin story, Feig said that "we have a very rough, rough outline that we’re working with, but definitely know the basic story, know what we want the basic characters to do, know what we want the world to do and what the rules of our world are, but nothing I want to discuss obviously"

It's back on. Dan Ackroyd wants to do it and now Bill Murrays rights are expired on the franchise so he can't stop it. It will make money purely out of the brand. Honestly, I will watch it out of curiosity!
