Default No internet via browser on win 7 laptop.

Any thoughts on this problem I've had at a customers house.

Laptop with win7 cannot access internet either wired or wireless through bt home hub 2 but can access the network.
However iPads and phones can access internet through the router.
So I assumed it was network controller issue so uninstalled and re-installed wifi and network devices and drivers. Still wouldn't connect. Tried tethering the laptop to phone and can access internet no problem.

Tried accessing internet on my laptop and same problem no internet access.

However windows update did work and updates downloaded and installed.

So thought I'd reset home hub but no luck. So tried logging into hub and could not connect with IP address via bthomehub.home.

My view is the router is knackered, blocking certain ports and devices. But why won't reset work and why can't I log into the hub?

Very odd. Going back tomorrow with an old bt hub to try that.

    Cheers

If you can tether with a phone (uses the phones proxy settings) and other phones can use it.

My first thought is proxy settings.

Proxy settings (doh!) but then why would my pc not access the internet through the router either?

and why couldn't i log into the router to check settings? Maybe multiple problems then?

Launch cmd and type ipconfig /all then look at the IP config for your network adapter. The gateway should be 192.168.1.254 and you can use this to access the config page.

What IP was the Laptop given when it was on the network? Should be in the 192.168.1.* range.
If it did, it's finding the router and DHCP is supplying the IP address and it's a Gateway issue.
Did you try using Static addresses?

    Reset should work.
On some Home Hub's you need to hold reset til all the lights go out, this can take upto 60 seconds on some of them.

http://bthomehub.home no longer works on my network either as I have changed the IP of the router to 172.16.1.1 for VPN reasons - can't imagine a normal home user doing such things though.

What happens if you ping 192.168.1.254?

That was the problem with the router as well, the reset button didn't 'click' when it was pressed in and i couldn't log in at all to the routers admin ui. (which is odd as it could see the router and connect to it.

I only had an hour this afternoon, so have to go back in the morning to try again.

Can't remember exact ip of the laptop but it was in the correct range, and was seeing the router ok and connecting to it. I suppose it could be a gateway issue, but wouldn't this affect the laptops ability to contact windows update? which it was able to do?

also my laptop couldn't access the internet on the router either wired or wireless.

will report back tomorrow. Will take another router over there.

Could also be DNS. I think on the home hubs you need to hold the button for a good while to reset.

Update: went back this morning and looked at the husbands laptop which was connected to the wifi , all ip adresses, gaetways and subnets normal.
Looked on the wife's laptop and no gateway was listed just blank in ipconfig same with my laptop when i tried to connect.

The homehub reset button wouldn't work, it didn't give that little click when you depress it, even when held for 60+ seconds. Still couldn't log into the admin account on the router with ip or url.

Connected another btbusiness hub to the phoneline, changed the broadband username and pw and all worked perfectly.

So something had screwed up the settings on the original bthub but with the reset button being knackered it meant i couldn't do anything with it.

    thanks for the input guys.

Did you have access to the homehub IP on the husbands laptop? You can reset the router via the CP but replacing the router was a good option as you had one spare.

No, i didn't try to login to the router on it. He wasn't keen on me messing with it, it was his work machine and he was busy using it unfortunately.

That old chestnut. More like he didn't want you discovering his copious amount of pr0n and reporting back to his missus!

It was odd though, someone or something had definitely messed the router up yet neither the husband or wife confessed to mucking around with it. I suspect the 12/ 13 year old lad may have been up to no good.
