    Advice Tethering Advice needed

Hope someone can advise me on this. My mum is going to keep my grandad company during the difficult time as my grandma just passed away. I am aware that when she's spent time at their home in the past, there's no internet etc which helps keep in contact with the rest of the family and keep a bit of sanity in the process! Anyone with very old relatives may understand the situation.

My mum has a wifi ipad so would like something to get online. From what I know she'll need a dongle and some sort of data plan. It's only really need for 1 month. Is there anything simple that she can get that's just turn on and go like connecting to a wifi router?

Rather than purchasing a dongle, does she have a mobile phone that can tether and a plan that you could use and add a chunk of data for the month? That would be the easiest way with minimum fuss.

Hi, thought about that first, but her phone is a very basic phone that's not even a smart one! Looking into it further, it's a Mobile Wifi devices she needs with a preloaded amount on it. £50-60 with either a 1-3gb limit on 3. Will keep searching!

Yes, there's a few hotspots but they need an bt account to use them. We are all either with sky, TalkTalk etc so no-one in the family is with bt. Would be far the easiest and cheapest way around it!

You can pay for a bt wifi account if the signal is good enough.

We did it in our new house using the neighbours internet as there was a delay setting up our broadband.

ee do a good one wifi dongle for 30 get first month free then 20 quid a month for 15 gb, the 30 quid covers your first month and you can give 30 days notice to cancel so you get the device and two months internet for 50 quid and its 4g, you can pick one up at currys as well

Be very wary with the EE group since merging t-mobile and orange has turned off more and more towers. I'm meant to get full strength 4G outside but struggle with a weak 3G one and it has deteriorated over time. They actually let me out of contract ~ 18 (can't remember exactly) months early because I couldn't get a signal and they couldn't get me a femtocell.

There was an offer with t-mobile a while back where if you topped up a payg sim with a tenner you get 500mb a month free. Are you wanting to use skype FaceTime etc or just use send the odd email?

Hi. We ended up with a £50 myfi unit from 3. It did the job needed and will be useful just to top-up in the future. Thanks for all the interesting replies, enhanced my knowledge on the subject!
