    Default new router recommendations?

i recently went to plusnet for my broadband, the connection and speed is great but the wifi router is utter shite - have to keep rebooting it as the wifi gradually slows to a crawl and eventually just drops all connections.
my old sky one was fine (even on the same wifi channel)
now, im looking at various routers and the d-link dir-845l
, there are some fair reviews of this router but id rather have a recommendation from someone here

i can pick one up new for a few pence under £72

is this router any good or is there anything better for roughly the same money??

I would go for a second hand draytek, if you are on adsl rather than vdsl then you are probs best going for a 2820n for cost to feature ratio. A 2710n will be good if you want a smaller feature set. I swear by my 2850Vn but they go for a lot second hand, probably because they are adsl/vdsl compatible.

I've been using a 2820n for years now teamed up to the virgin superhub and it's rock solid, I think I've rebooted it once in about 5 years and turned out it was the superhub which had gone down not the draytek.

As above, with a VDSL modem you can use the 2820n as the router with the modem connected to the ethernet WAN port.

Again another vote for Draytek. I've got them running at lots of site (some ordinary ADSL Internet connections, others multi-site VPN) and they have been faultless in their operation. I can't remember the last time I've needed to reboot any of them other than for updates.

Cool, glad it arrived ok / amazed it arrived next day from Royal Fail - forgot to do a factory reset on it but easy enough to do, also didn't include the user manual / cd - you can download it HERE - any problems or questions on setting it up let me know.

    Enjoy . . .

I agree Draytek's are a whole league above your regular domestic routers, and don't cost much more (or may even cost less). Heaps of features on them that you wouldn't normally be dreaming about in this price range. (e.g. QoS, VPN)

I am a little surprised at the mentioned reliability rate though, I used to be responsible for around 30 x 2820's spread across multiple sites and I normally needed to get one rebooted at least one every week or two.

I'm not knocking them, the reliablity wasn't bad considering how many there were and I suppose some could have experience problems with power supply as they were stationed on building sites.

Tbh, I thought Drayteks were probably the best solution for home usage, but if I want a router that never ever goes down and lets you do virtually anything imaginable that you could expect out of a router, I woudld be looking at pfSense (maybe teamed with a Draytek 120 if you use ADSL). Only ever once had one being moody when power was restored after a failure, rebooted again and it was solid.

The last option I thought I would mention is DD-WRT. I believe there was a DLink DIR 815 that was sold cheap as chips that could be modded to run DD-WRT. Feature wise I would put it in between Drayteks and pfSense. I only ever messed with a couple of boxes which seemed ok so I can't comment on stability, but I prefer Draytek or pfSense.

I use DD-WRT modded DIR-615 boxes to add WAPs to a network or public hotspots but I didn't think dd-wrt worked with adsl modems so required two boxes. Very handy, the d-links can be had for £10-15.

I've also recently signed up to Plusnet fibre, anyone else got a free router they can throw my way, lol???

Seriously, looking for something decent up to around £100, would prefer something all in one so I can get rid of the BT fibre box, but that's not critical, any recommendations please? Cheers.
