Default macbook boots to OS utils screen... help

following on from an earlier challenge to get past the efi lock (and icloud lock)...

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

The macbook now boots into the OS utils screen, but doesnt seem to pick up on the boot drive.

Holding down the option key loads a screen with network and recovery 10.9 option.

The disk utils recognise a drive but im not sure if a remote format has taken place and efi lock was applied.

Any ideas on how i can get this to boot to the OS or recover or reinstall the OS?

Sounds like the drive might be file vault encrypted, Can you wipe the drive at all?

    eyup Scottio

clicking on the recovery drive takes me back to the OS X Utilities screen

    This has 4 options:

    1. restore from Time Machine Backup.
This goes to a menu where I am not able to select a backup source (none show on the screen to select)

    2. reinstall OS X.
Goes to a menu and says I need to connect to internet. Im reluctant to do this as apparently if the OS has been upgraded I will need the icloud account details for the original account holder.

    3. help (lets ignore this)

    4. Disk utility
This shows a drive in the left bar (500.28 GB APPLE SSD SM512E Media with 'Untitled' as a sub folder. 499.42 Gb capacity with 3 folders and 3 files . Used 447.3 mb. Mount point /Volumes/Untitled

In the area below the drive there is 'disk1' with OS X Base System as a sub folder This shows as a 1.25GB capacity disk.

    Any ideas?

All you need to do is select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and erase it.

Once its erased, close disk utility and you should have an option to Reinstall Mac OS X

I did that and it seems to have erased 1 file

The reinstall menu works but needs me to connect to the wifi.

Now here is the issue... if the mac was remotely locked and wiped, will this process tip off the previous dickhead owner or require me to know their account details?

Turn the machine off, boot it and hold the cmd, alt, p and r key until you hear 2 chimes

Then hold alt and boot to recovery and try install again

What OS is it trying to install?

If you boot the mac holding cmd and R it will boot to internet recovery, you might have a bit more luck with this than the standard recovery drive

Plug into ethernet though as it can take a while over wifi

You might be better off taking this to an Apple Store or Service provider, they have images that they can install with no download needed.

As far as I'm aware no serial number is blocked by Apple, unless iCloud has something to do with it nowadays?

If you have access to a 2nd mac you can make a bootable USB stick for the OS.

If the MacBook Air has a recovery partition on the drive, it won't boot to the internet recovery console. The cmd+R will make it boot to the recovery partition already present on the drive by default. It only boots to internet recovery, if there is no recovery partition existing on the internal drive.

You will need to boot from an external source (USB/ethernet/CD) to erase and repartition the entire drive (rather than just erasing the OS partition, which subsequently leaves the recovery partition in place, thus causing your reinstallation problems).

The MacBook Air most likely shipped with an OS prior to Mavericks, but has since been upgraded via an App Store download. Unless you enter App Store login credentials that has previously purchased (i know it's free upgrade, but it's still classed as a purchase as far as licensing goes) OS Mavericks, then it will always fail to download the image and restore from the existing recovery partition.

Hope that makes sense for you.

It should just load fine if you get a USB or just download an OS X install disk from torrents or similar?

If you've got a Linux live DVD lying around it should boot to that as well which would at least tell you the hardware is now yours?

Have you got a USB drive you could use?
