    Default HP Microserver N54L

So ive seen that quite a few of you have these, whats the benefits of using one of these as a NAS server apart from it being cheaper? I also quickly glanced in XPEnology, is this a kind of operating system? again what are the benfits?

Had a look around to see if there were any cashback deals. I just cant afford a proper NAS right now so this might be the way to go...

I think cashback has stopped on the microservers now, i tho had discontinued the cheaper models but I'm sure some of our resident HP techs will know better. They were better because they could run a full blown OS so you could run almost any app whereas NAS devices need apps to be ported to them. They are much more flexible but require more initial set up.

I have one running xpenology and wouldn't go back to windows server.
so bloody easy to use and setup.

    install hard drive
    boot to xpenology usb
    install xpenology os
    start rubbing hands together

I assume xpenology can't run x86 software? It looks like it's based on Synology DSM firmware which is pretty awesome but I run a lot of applications on windows server so don't think it'd suit me but nice to know DSM is available as I have supplied a few Synology devices in the past and the UI is very nice and they are supported by updates for 3+ years.

Tbh I haven't tried running anything other than the basic packages, as it suits me fine and does everything I need it to.
It's the dsm software ported to be used on non dsm systems like the hp54nl and pc's etc.
