Sky News New Law Plan To Tackle Mobile Phone Blackspots

New Law Plan To Tackle Mobile Phone Blackspots

    • Proposed legislation could force Vodafone, O2, EE and Three to allow customers to 'roam' on to each other's networks.

Mobile telephone users could soon be able to talk to their friends even when they enter a signal blackspot, if proposed new legislation goes ahead.
Culture Secretary Sajid Javid wants to change the law to force networks to allow customers to switch providers when their phones cannot find a signal.
It has been estimated that a fifth of Britain suffers from an unreliable mobile phone signal.
The Government is expected to start a consultation process on the reforms this week.

    • It follows the failure of the 'big four' phone operators - Vodafone, O2, EE and Three - to reach an agreement on improving reception in areas where it is poor.
In most of the areas, at least one or two of the networks have sufficient coverage for people to receive a signal.
Mr Javid is understood to believe that the companies should be forced to allow 'roaming' between networks to ensure that everyone can receive a signal regardless of which operator they are with.

    • Currently, customers who have contracts with one network cannot make calls, send text messages or transfer data using another network.
Yet, whenever a customer travels abroad, they are able to use any network their operator has an agreement with.
A Whitehall source told The Daily Telegraph: "We want to eradicate this situation of partial not-spots.
"There is expected to be a consultation in the coming days and this could include a legislative option. If these companies do not change, we might force them to change."

A lot of the problem could also be solved if the masts were twice as high and the power turned up especially in rural areas.

Guy I know sells some software he developed to manage how the billing would spread for this scenario. Never sold it in the UK though...

Something so obvious and the providers are stalling. Don't see why as it would mean more customers on previously crappy reception areas !?!

I'm guessing because your network would need to pay charges to other networks while you are "roaming".

I'm guessing there is no way this will ever be passed, when was the last time you heard simple common sense being used by government for the benefit of consumers?

They bitch all they fucking like but if the law get's passed they will need to adhere to it.

The cunts already do it anyway as that's how the police always have coverage.

It does seem unfair that those networks who have invested heavily in their infrastructure will have to share the fruits of their labours with those that haven't but can give 000s of free minutes and virtually unlimited data. Either way, its customers who will probably have to pay more to see this become reality.

It's all bollox and the secret battle that is probably going on behind the scenes is the companies trying to grab money back they paid for the spectrum of 4g.
More than likely in secret corrupt tax deals.

If EE hadn't started chopping so many cell towers the problem wouldn't be as bad.

I hope it does go through! the only signal we get that's any good here in Devon is orange (EE) and that's very sparse in places.
I'm on 3 and kids are on tesco while the missus is on EE so that way hopefully at least one of us has a signal.

so to be able to get a signal no matter where we are would be great.

Its funny, all this started when Cunteron© was out in the sticks, couldn't get a signal and then instructed his aides to look into why that was.
