It Won't copy the 2nd partition on to a smaller ssd even though the xp install is only 18gb and the ssd is 30b.
Looks like it's going to be a fresh install to the ssd.

Another vote for acronis here.

Side note: To make the most of the SSD you will need to run an optimiser tool if you are using Win XP. Win 7 clean installs do this automatically but if you imaged a HDD to a SSD it would also need manually optimising like with XP

Dd command?

Dd is a Linux partition clone command.
Im struggling to find a decent tut/tool for xp specific tweaks. From memory it's things like disabling the swap file and enabling trim. Will keep looking and post back if I find one.

Not a great guide but a few pointers, little section on xp. What SSd do you have? I read that corsair were working on trim for xp as it doesn't support it natively. Most manufacturers have toolboxes you can download to maintain the drive from time to time.

It is a corsair.
I will have a look into it tomorrow then and have a read of that link too.
Thanks buddy

When moving to SSD, it's also a good idea to enable AHCI.
It will still work without AHCI, but in ATA mode your best case outcome will be slightly degraded performance. Worst case outcome is that you have a controller that declares the TRIM command invalid in ATA mode as well as the degraded performance.
I know a trick to change XP to AHCI that seems to work nicely with Intel controllers, but every so often when I try this I end up with an unbootable drive.
Conveniently you will be imaging your drive, so you can try on a restored copy and if it kills it, you can always go back and try again (or don't).
Ah fuck it I'll just install win 8 on it then.

Win 8 will make more use of the SSD than XP, still run the corsair toolbox once the OS is installed as it may offer some extra tweaks but win 8 will do the important tweaks for you when installing the clean OS.
Slightly OT but is there a way to move all the installed software without the OS from Vista to win 7?
