if it is a uk one they cant be rooted as far as i am aware but once they are rooted i am sure they are basically open like an android set top box so you can install apps easily and also use the play store

    Thanks to trueblue924

You're best off asking on XDA forum. Plus if it's a similar process to the original kindle fire then you'll need to buy/make a cable to put it into fastboot mode

It's true the HD Fire is a bitch, but not impossible.

Personally I'd follow this guide on cnet (reputable post).

Also, as mentioned above, ask around on XDA-Dev too.
I personally have never heard of anyone personally killing an Android device when rooting it. The fact they usually have a fool proof recovery as part of the device usually helps.
All Android devices have a recovery procedure because its how the software gets on there in the first place, usually by means of a RUU - or similar.

The best goldmine for the information you need is right here...

ALWAYS read, read and read again, before rooting. Others have been and done what you are about to do, they share their experience on XDA Dev.

Rooting a device means you have unlocked the administrator account, or SU in terms of Android (SuperUser). It means that anything that used to be unreachable, can now be messed about with.

Usually, most people do not really need root access. If you are after free games/free apps etc. Simply install Aptoide or similar - Rooting not required.

If you want to change the way the device behaves or reacts - or install a completely up-to-date version of Android on it - rooting is the only way.
XPosed Module APK is a program that simplifies some of this on a lot of devices.

To be honest, are you sure your son wants/needs root?

You can sideload apps fairly easily. You can also edit the icon so it looks OK on the carousel using the APK Icon editor.

    Thanks to TJB
