    Default Sinclair Spectrum Vega

    Hey,

Just saw this on my news feed https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/s...-spectrum-vega

Backed by Sir Clive himself, it is a cut down Spectrum that is preloaded with games and has an SD slot for more to be added.
It is cut down so it is basically a joypad. Problem is the price.. £100 ...

Not for me, but might interest some folk:

for 100 quid I'd expect a psp style device with a screen, they show the hardware in some of the videos and the PCB looks like it costs pennies to produce.

Be nice if it had a USB input for a keyboard too so you could do a bit of Basic.

Plus lets face it guys, no matter how "retro" you think you are, the games have aged like donkey shit.

For me it should be a full ZX Spectrum with a built in SD slot, a game pad / controller and be about 50 quid.

Nice idea, but crazy price. You can get an actual spectrum with a load of games on ebay for half that.

Is this some sort of Yorkshire man sketch?

Ok, for me it should be a Full spectrum with a 6" 3D 1080p IPS screen (nothing less for those awesome graphics) and it should re-render all the games into 3D like the Virtual boy. And it should cost 40quid.

    Sarcasm?

For 50 Quid you can buy a Raspberry pi, keyboard & game pad & do the same thing (If it would run a Spectrum emulator) so I don't see why a unit couldn't be made for that sort of money.

I think they will sell a lot more at £50 than £100.

You said yourself that the PCB would be pennies.

£100 for that?! You can get the Sega joypads with great games for about £20 these days.

I had Atari and Commodore as I grew up but I think £100 for an Amiga joypad with a load of games might be pushing it - especially as it's doubtful any of that money is going to the original developers.

Expensive and how do you connect it to a TV?

For £24.99 you can get a Hand Held Mega Drive with built in screen and a SD card slot for adding more games

I just read the original Indiegogo link and it does say this about the royalties which is a nice touch at least - I hope it at least raises some money for charity!
Retro Computers Ltd is making arrangements with the owners of the software rights to Spectrum games to donate a combined software royalty to a charity – Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. The company’s Chairman, Dr David Levy, had his life saved by the hospital when he was diagnosed with meningitis as a 3-year-old.
It's raising money quickly anyway - it's at £87k in three days - looks like a lot of Spectrum owners are feeling reminiscent. Wonder if they've heard of emulators?

They do appear to be playing on the 'charity' thing with it.

    * £100 is too much.
    * Lack of info is cementing the fact I will not buy one (how it connects to TV, can I plug in a Keyboard etc....)

It just says with the cables it comes with - could be an old school composite cable or an HDMI - it'll be fully funded in a few minutes so maybe they'll release some more details.

It's on Twitter as the ultimate Christmas gift but they won't ship until April - Santa is coming late this year

Actually I just found a link on the Register which says it's powered by HDMI but the video is only over a composite AV. That's different!
You’ll need to dig out a Retro TV too as, just like the original pregnant calculator, the Vega uses RCA composite video to plug into a goggle box. However, the Reg was told power will come through an HDMI lead.

One of the videos says its powered via USB, i think they're confusing HDMI with USB.

That would make more sense for sure - in fact doesn't the Chromecast have to do that anyway as HDMI doesn't provide power? Just had a look at the MHL HDMI extension does provide power but that's fairly recent.

It's fully funded anyway - I wonder if we'll see a load of other projects turn up now for the other platforms trying to get a bit of money off the back of this one?

£100 seems steep. For that price you can get an Android tablet that can run a speccy emulator and has a screen. Now if it did a bit more it might be good but it doesn't look that impressive. Although the £100 is for the first 1000 ltd edition ones. Maybe they will do a cheaper one after that run.

I'd buy one for £40. £100 is nuts.

As for the games aging badly. I still play them and enjoy them.
