Tech Router - QoS or Load Balancing

    Hi
I been looking at different routers for a friend and also the firmware on mine and doing the comparisons for both they highlight the advantages of QoS and/or Load balancing, can anybody explain the difference to me in laymans speak. Would it be better to have one rather than the other of essential to have both or are they essentially the same thing?
    best wishes

Load balancing is where there can be two WAN connections and the traffic will be balanced over the two WANs but no single client can take advantage of the bandwidth of both WAN connections. i.e. you can have two 30Mbps lines coming into your router and two users could max out one line each but no single client machine could use 60Mbps of bandwidth as that requires DSL bonding kit.

I have yet to experiment with QoS but from my understanding it prioritises certain traffic so you can group different types of traffic and set their QoS by importance i.e. VoIP is usually more important than downloads as you don't want dropped calls. So if downloads are maxing your bandwidth and some VoIP traffic hits the router it will decrease the bandwidth allocated to the download to ensure the call isn't affected.

They are not two names ofr the same thing, my Draytek router has both options.

    Hi
Understood, that is not what I thought load balancing was, I now see the difference clearly. he is buying Draytek mega router, I have Asus Dark knight (running Tomato shibby).
Incedently did you see Liam Walsh winning another belt at weekend - I still have the photo of him holding your tickets lol.
    thanks

I was going out for a heavy night in Shoreditch but just before we left I saw most of the Walsh fight and he was smashing it! A lot of talent there, will keep an eye out for his other fights.

Which Draytek has he gone for? I just ordered the 2860n-Plus for a job, needed it for the integrated VDSL modem.
