BBC News Heathrow plane in near miss with drone

An unidentified drone came close to hitting a plane as it landed at Heathrow, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has confirmed.

An Airbus A320 pilot reported seeing a helicopter-style drone as the jet was 700 feet off the ground on its approach to the runway at 1416 GMT on 22 July.

The CAA has not identified the airline or how close the drone came to the plane, which can carry 180 people.

It gave the incident an "A" rating, meaning a "serious risk of collision".

This is the highest incident rating the CAA can give.

Investigators were unable to identify the drone, which did not appear on air traffic control radar and disappeared after the encounter.

    Crash warning

In May the pilot of an ATR 72 turbo-prop plane reported seeing a helicopter drone only 80 feet away as he approached Southend airport at a height of 1,500 feet.

The incidents have prompted a warning from the British Airline Pilots' Association (Balpa) that the rapid increase in the number of drones operated by amateur enthusiasts now poses "a real risk" to commercial aircraft.

The association's general secretary, Jim McAuslan said drones could cause a repeat of the "Hudson River experience", when a plane was forced to land in water in New York in 2009 after birds were sucked into its engines.

"The risk of a 10 kilogram object hitting a plane is a real one that pilots are very concerned about" he said.

"A small drone could be a risky distraction for a pilot coming into land and cause serious damage if they hit one."

The CAA said it had to depend on people using their common sense when they operated drones

Sales of drones have increased rapidly, with UK sales running at a rate of between 1,000 and 2,000 every month.

They are expected to be very popular as Christmas presents.

They cost as little as £35 for a smaller model - more advanced drones capable of carrying a high definition camera and travelling at 45 miles per hour cost almost £3,000.

Only a very small minority of people operating drones have attended training courses in how to fly them.

    'Common sense'

A spokesman for the CAA said it had to depend on people using their common sense when they operated drones.

He said the current level of risk should be "kept in perspective" but warned that breaking laws governing the use of drones could potentially threaten commercial aircraft.

"People using unmanned aircraft need to think, use common sense and take responsibility for them", he said.

"There are rules which have the force of law and have to be followed."

Drones may not be flown higher than 400 feet or further than 500 metres from the operator, and they must not go within 50 metres of people, vehicles or buildings.

There are exclusion zones around airports and the approaches to them for drones weighing more than seven kilograms.

Mr McAuslan said there was an urgent need for rules to be tightened before much larger unmanned cargo planes - potentially the size of a Boeing 737 - took to the skies.

Really the sort of idiot that will ensure they get a load more restrictions on drones getting to the point you won't be able to fly them.

Terrorists could use this to pilot drones into aircraft. I fecking hope they don't start this as there isn't any way to overcome it

Wow, the propaganda has been working well.

I seriously doubt one of these shitty drones would be a terrorists weapon of choice. If anything more likely to be an accident instigated by a retard or even a false flag operation to blame on terrorists.

If we look at the trend, most terrorist attacks have invlolved explosives to ensure a mess will be made. (Even the ones that probably weren't done by the people our media refer to as terrorists but they insist were done by them).

Tbh, when I listen to the news, I mentally switch the words terrorist with freedom fighter and allied forces with terrorists. Makes the reality a little easier to comprehend.

We also have to remember, the Americians (we align our selves to their side) started the terrorist attacks with drones. If we are concerned about this, maybe we should involve ourselves in instigating terrorism. Or instead we can just keep taking the piss but start crying loudly when we get the same treatment returned.

Sounds like a UFO to me. Fucking aliens buzzing aircraft again, happens all the time. Especially around airports, but it's rarely reported. They are testing us.

This is just the start on the road to getting these drones banned. Personally I really cant see the risk but as said above this is just the 1st stage in tarnishing the image of these things with a view to banning them.

Czar, they finished testing years ago, it's now time the annihilation begins, little drones carrying Martians around on them.

Would have thought a drone would disintegrate on impact with a plane. I know being sucked into the engine is an issue but so is a seagull !

Only way I think it would cause any issue would be if it were carrying a couple of pounds of stuff it shouldn't be, but then I think targeting it would be a right bitch I don't think it would be worth trying.

This is part of the reason mine is on ebay at the moment, I can see it becoming harder to fly them unless your miles from anywhere with no one about.

they could just put a hight/distance limit on them, that would be the easy fix.

It's a hobby that a few fuck wits cause trouble and give true law abiding flyer a bad name.

If these quadcpoters get banned I'll not be a happy chappy specially just paying close on £1500 for one and only flown it twice.

They should ban any aircraft within 3 miles of a airport full stop.

Aircraft as you describe them are banned from a certain distance of an airport - model rockets planes etc. these have been round for years and took more skill and learning so the people involved were more serious and learnt up on the regs.

first two hits on Google one for UK other for us

yep alot of these videos ive seen on youtube etc people are within 150m of house's etc

Unless CAA permission has been granted the pilot cannot:

    • Fly over or within 150m (492 ft) of a congested area
    • Fly over or within 150m (492 ft) of an organised open-air assembly of more than 1,000 persons
    • Fly within 50m (164 ft) of any vessel, vehicle or structure which is not under the control of the person in charge of the aircraft
    • Fly within 50m (164 ft) of any person

The ease of use, price and hence prevalence is going to end up with a lot of people in trouble me thinks.

I remember the the days as a kid 20+ years ago watching people with model aircraft and the greatest care they took with these things - it was a real passion (and expensive). Now we're just going to get people perving in bedroom windows from a £50 gadget.

Technology gets smaller and cheaper hence every perve, Tom dick and Harry will get one plus kids with brainless parents.

Trouble is they look like toys, advertised as toys but in reality they are not.

    Licensed and age restricted perhaps.
