Question Beats Pro by Dr Dre?

    Hey guys,

These will be my first over the ear headphones so be gentle.
Anyway I'm thinking of buying a pair so tried a few on in the store, trying to be as objective as possible... and these really stood out for the kind of music I listen to (mainly soul, hip hop, R&B etc..). I also tried the Sennheiser Momentum, and a couple of other premium pairs from Sony, Marshall (gimmicky I know) and Philips.

I can get them brand new for the equivalent of £200, and I think at that price they're pretty good... or not???

They look a bit 80s geezer
Bigger issue though is that they don't have an iPhone remote, I really love being able to skip tracks and adjust volume without taking my phone out.

not looked at any recently but on the first few generations of the Beats headphones they were OK, but not exceptional in reviews. You can probably get better sounding ones for less, but if looking like a mid life crisis wannabe gangsta is your ting blud, it has to be the beats.

I got some beats free with an iMac air, but would rather another brand (my daughter thinks they are great) For style I do like the B&W headphones. They have iPhone control too I'm lead to believe

I picked up the Logitech UE 6000 recently and they're superb for what I paid. They're discontinued now but plenty of places selling new ones like Amazon but the new Beats aren't just bass monsters any more from what some of the reviews have said?

I just bought some Sennheiser IE80's for my Pono Player, not over the ear, but they are superb.

I was under the impression that Beats were more about marketing and less about quality, Sennheiser have always been good for me and I feel you are paying less of a premium for the brand. B&O/Bose are good quality but I am sure there is a large premium due to the brand.

Well I went back to the shop and spent a good hour going through my music library listening to the various cans on display. They had a pretty extensive selection of Bose, AKG, Sennheiser etc..
Anyway I hate to say it, but my favourite time and again were the Beats Pro for the simple reason that it had the best lower frequency response and the level of volume, loudness and bass it managed to extract from my iPhone was astonishing. With the Sennheiser Momentum I felt like I still wanted more volume (I'm probably also going deaf) + the bass was pretty disappointing.

Thanks all (for not managing to sway me )

If you after some cheap ones the sound out of the Sennheiser hd202s isn't bad for the price. Best sound I've experienced from over the ear headphones is the Bose QC25.

Beats are a gimmick. They have a good marketing department. To echo the words above they "are pants".

I use a pair of these at home - http://www.trustedreviews.com/Denon-...dphones-review

Although if you are using your iphone to drive them, it doesn't really matter what headphones you get. As the amp and the DAC (as well as the mp3 you'll be listening to) will not give you the best music experience. You may as well save your money and get a £50 set. It might sound snobby... But it's the truth.

How is the Pono Player? Do they have a good supply of 24 bit rips?

You mention over ear headphones and you mention genres of music that can be very bass heavy which makes me suspect there is a link. From old/cheapo headphones I've had it did seem that was the way to go, but there are in ear ones that can deliver great sound.

In ear headphone are normally pants when it comes to proper bass, but I remember being very impressed with a set of Shures (SE305?) I got after a few people on here recommended them. Got my brother the updated SE 315's for xmas a year or two ago and he's been happy with them, although he is more into metal and that kind of stuff.

Iirc, some reviews said the 305's weren't a very bass heavy sound, closer to neutral then pounding bass, but I found when I put my tunes on with very mild EQ settings I would have all the bass I wanted. With every other in ear pair, I found I would need to keep pressing them into my ear if I wanted to hear any bass but with those, once I had found the adaptor (out of the kit supplied) that fitted my ear best, I got to really like them - as soon as I lost a pair I got another identical replacement.

    Thanks to Over Carl

    What he said!!

    Sennheiser all the way.

I have been an R'n'B/Hip Hop dj since 91. I have tried and had all sorts of headphones and the HD 25's are the best by far!!

    Fyi.

I use hd 25 sp's for mixing. Had the same pair for over 10 years! Only replaced the muffs last year.

The player is bob on, no complaints there. The music store, however, is another story. Very limited 24 bit rips so far but they are promising many more to come soon. It also depends on your region as the US store has far more available content than other regions, so I guess they're still haggling over licensing.
