Help Wii u premium vs basic or something else entirely ?

    Morning all

I fancy a Wii u to try some of the latest games especially Mario kart 8

I see that I can pick up a basic pack for around £140

I haven't looked at Wii u before today so I'm a bit clueless. Is it worth getting one at all or are they a dead dog ? Should I forget the Wii u altogether and go for an Xbox one or ps4 ? Again I really don't know which as I haven't paid much attention to the current gen stuff.

What are the real differences to the premium pack or will the basic do me just fine ?

    Thanks,

    Malty

I bought my little one a wii u thinking I'll get a handful of games and then just download as many demos as I want,
the demos can only be played x number of times before you need to purchase, whereas on the xbox/ps this is not true

hence why I sold and bought an xbox one with kinect

I got one for Christmas and it's the first party games that make it. Mario 3d and Mario Kart are superb, plus the ability to play games off TV is really handy too. Not sure what is coming out in the New Year, but I get so little chance to play it doesn't really matter to me- I'll work my way through all the Marios, then move onto Zelda when it comes out.

Easy to say when I've inly had it 3 days and didn't shell out for it, but I love it.

Can you play all the games on the handset without the TV ? That would be really useful to me.

I too am very much a casual gamer these days. No time for anything.

Bought my lad one for xmas and loving the games. Lego city undercover is like gta for kids and the mario games are brilliant. Mk8 is addictive as ever. Infinity it good for the kids as well. Its an excellent console although we have the xb1 aswell for more adult games. Depends what games float your boat.

I use the off TV play all the time.I would say "It's not a beast like the Xbox or PS". However, There's not too many games i would buy for them opposed to the wii U.

I've been to town and bought a ps4. Didn't like the tiny selection of games for the Wii u. Even though the Nintendo ones might be great I thought it might become frustrating that the big name games might not arrive for it.

The remote play feature with my vita intrigues me too.

    Cheers,

    Malty

Tiny selection? There's more exclusive games than the rival consoles, and next years line up is staggering.

Wii U has been my favourite console for a long long time. Looking forward to Mario Maker and of course the new Zelda in the new year.

If you like Mario and the other Nintendo games it's of course the only option. We were looking at games in town and even the missus commented that when ps4 and Xbox had around 5 stands worth of games, the Wii u would have 1.

I just think I'll get more use out of a ps4 and more variety. I'm not ruling out getting my fix of Mario kart 8 at some point tho...

Unfortunatly not. Most do though. Also if you have any old wiimotes lying around the Wii U controller has a wii bar built into the top of it If you hack the vWii you can put a load of Wii games/emulators on a USB stick and can play them all on the handset instead of the TV.

Had Mario Kart 8 for christmas, fantastic game
the WiiU in general has a shit interface, shit slow at updating but the games are amazing and the fact some games can be played on the controller and the mrs can have the TV on still is a massive bonus
You know he grew up as a little shitspark from the old shitflint and then he turned into a shitbonfire and driven by the winds of his monumental ignorance he turned into a raging shitfirestorm. If I get to be married to Barb I'll have total control of Sunnyvale and then I can unleash the shitnami tidal wave that will engulf Ricky and extinguish his shitflames forever. And with any luck he'll drown in the undershit of that wave. Shitwaves.

Well I caved in today and bought a wii U premium with Mario Kart 8. Got a decent deal in sainsbury's as I had some nectar points to use and a voucher for triple nectar points which means I've had a tenner worth of card points back too.

Updating the console took almost an hour ! Then I had to update the gamepad itself then update mario kart. It was almost 2 hours before we could get a game in !

I'm really impressed with the gamepad. The screen is much much better than I expected. The missus is happily sat here trying to beat my time trial time on Mario Kart whilst I'm watching something on the TV with the baby. She is not a gamer in even the slightest sense of the word so it's doing a good job to have hooked her.

She wants some puzzle games. She's not very interested in action games so if anyone has any suggestions ?

    thanks

Aren't they platformers rather than puzzlers. She likes brain training, stuff like that although I'll definitely try getting her into the likes of Mario Bros, toad etc as I'll want to play them anyway.

    Neither are platformers

Captain Toad Treasure Tracker - you have to collect all the crystals on the map and have extra challenges to get - you can't jump or anything no special powers

Pikmin 3 you have to control a hoard of pikmins to solve puzzles

There's a demo of Pikmin - I tried it and it's not too shabby to be honest. Might pick it up when I get some money Captain Toad looks interesting too.

Captain Toad is brill. It's clearly a kiddie game, but it just feels so right. Reminds me of the time I first played Super Mario 64 - Just feels like a totally consistent world in there, not just a game.
