    Default Movies on 360

    Hey all,

My lad has got a 360 and i would like for him to play some movies i have downloaded for him - thing is i am a Sony fanboy and am unfamiliar with XBox.

The movies i have downloaded come in different formats, the xbox has a 500gb harddrive, i have a 32gb USB and i have a 1TB external harddrive.

What's the best/easiest way to get the movies playing?

    Ta!

OK, i 'm a noob! Checked out Plex and it appears there is a fee for using this? I was hoping for a no cost option (aren't we all?)

I can see Plex is out in the usual download sites, but my lad uses hisxbox online - will this cause issues?

    Why is nothing ever simple?!

You need a Plex pass account. Even if you were to install it from the usual places it wouldn't run without a Plex pass account.

Any other suggestions? It doesn't need to sync all my media (don't want him accessing Dad 'special' folder!). I just want to able to transfer a load of kiddy movies over for him so he has his own library.

I always used it free before when the PMS was installed on my pc and streaming over the house network?

    this from Plex site

    Free Features

The basic functionality of Plex is available to all users. This includes setting up your media content on your Plex Media Server with rich and beautiful metadata, streaming content to Plex Apps both locally and when away from home, sharing content with other Plex users, using Channels, and adding online content to your Plex It! Queue among other things.

That may well be the case with the windows app but the 360, xbone, playstation apps were all early access which means a plex pass is required. Not sure if thats still true as it was released as early access in October but a friend of mine got a Xbone for christmas and signed up for plex pass, I assume so he could use it on his Xbone.

    2 Thanks given to beerman

You're right .. needs a plex pass now but they are bringing out a fee for installing it if you don't have pass.. can't find any more info on that at the moment

If the movies are xvid format (not HD) you could stream them via a USB stick using the XB360 video player.

It will also find content on a local NAS etc.

Will the 360 play mkvs through dlna? If so Plex server has an option to turn on dlna.

I just play them with the xbox video player and media player on the PC.
Just have to allow the xbox in windows settings.

Works for most videos apart from mkv.

Otherwise you can put them on a usb as long as it's formatted with FAT32.
This means no files over 2gb tho so could cause issues.

in which case I think Plex would be the only option as the plex server does the decoding (i think as i've not tried Plex on my 360 only on my XB1)

downloaded Plex and installed on XBox - can't get any further without paying £3.99 per month, £31.99 per year or £119 for lifetime - feck that for wanting to play a few dvds!

I have also tried using http://serviio.org/
That's free and does the transcoding but it's a bit flakey at times (the server sometimes crashes and doesn't restart).

There is an xbox 360 profile in the settings.

i have about 1TB of movies on an external drive - i would rather plug this into the XBox and play direct from that. Is that possible? (bear in mind the files sizes are over 4gb).

I read somewhere you can do it if you format the drive as macx format or something mac related.
As the xbox can read this for playing files off an ipod. But I never tried it as it seem a bit convaluted.

At least on the xbox one you can now have NTFS drives plugged in.
So stupid the 360 doesn't support them.

    Thanks to inspectercoley

My plex runs fine on my kids 360 with no pass. If you got in to system video apps it picks up the plex server from there.

Can't get plex to work - it still asks for a login and then says i need a pass.

I plugged in the 1TB hdd and the xbox doesn't even see it (went through the video player options).
