Default SLI - is it worth it?

    Chaps

So I have a gtx570 Beast and am getting a Palit gtx 970 on Tuesday. My question is is it worth it to put both these in SLI mode or will the 970 have enough hmmph on its own? Note I only have a 700W PSU bit with only 1hdd and 1 blu-ray player.

Will it give me that much better picture? I only have a 22 inch wide screen monitor.

    Thanks

    J

The 970 should do all the games in full eye candy. Really its down to other things inside the PC that could bottleneck. I still use a 550Ti in my rig and it plays all the games very well at high res. My only bottlenecks at the time were that a game I played streamed data from the hardrive that slowed it down. Getting a SSD cured this. I can hit on average 100 fps in most games on recommended settings

The 970 only uses 145 watts of power
    The 570 uses a whopping 219 watts

The 970 uses PCIe 3.0 x16 slots so if your motherboard is not upto it you will probably loose about 5% total output. Not sure on this but you will have to check. it is still backwards compatible though.

Thanks mate, I can live with 5% drop and not have to spend another 150 on a new mb!!

This is the MB: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

It claims "The GIGABYTE motherboard is fully configured to provide gamers with the latest Gen.3 PCI Express technology, delivering maximum data bandwidth for forthcoming discrete graphics cards.
    * PCIe Gen. 3 is dependent on CPU and expansion card compatibility."

But then on the specs tab says:

    "
    1. 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x16 (PCIEX16)
      * For optimum performance, if only one PCI Express graphics card is to be installed, be sure to install it in the PCIEX16 slot.
    2. 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x8 (PCIEX8) * The PCIEX8 slot shares bandwidth with the PCIEX16 slot. When the PCIEX8 slot is populated, the PCIEX16 slot will operate at up to x8 mode.
    3. 3 x PCI Express x1 slots
(All PCI Express slots conform to PCI Express 2.0 standard.)
    4. 2 x PCI slots

    "

Most mboards do that if you add 2 cards they go down to x8

Mine is an Rampage gene II board. which can either have crossfire or sli. (both at x16)
boards getting out of date but it still rocks after 5 years or so hard gaming

I might upgrade the graphix in the new year, but will wait to see how the prices go down

For SLI mode, both gpus have to be the same.

I have an triple monitor setup using a single card AMD r9 290 (5760*1080). The GTX 970 is quicker than my card. So far as the 22" monitor is concerned, the GTX 970 is overkill.

    Thanks to pattikins

Cool, will sell the 570 then. At least this card will cover me for the next 3-4 years.

you could leave it in the pc to handle the PhysX side of things.

Why does "fat chance" and "slim chance" mean
    the same thing?
