If I owned a company and found out an employee tweeted that I would have sacked them.

Who wants an arsehole like that working for them?

People really do need to realise that the Internet as a whole, not just Twitter and facefuck is not the place to have jokes and opinions....

Most employers do look at potential employees social media sites as a guide to investing in the right person. A CV doesn't tell you about a personality flaw and by filtering out the loonies it saves a lot of time and resources getting the right person in front of you for an interview. The guy hasn't done himself any favours, and should act his age and not his shoe size in the future!

I see a lot of intolerance here.

I suspect that many of us have made mistakes online in our lives, time to lighten up and forgive a little.

There are many famous employment and social media cases to cite here, but the disrepute has a high threshold requiring the company to prove this occurred if it is the basis for dismissal. IIRC VW was party to the case.

Ultimately the company's social media policy is king, where this is strict with regards what can and cannot be said there is little flexibility for an individual, even with personal social media accounts (see the case of apple v crisp iirc).

If anyone is interested in this, I wrote a paper on employment and social media some time ago, happy to post if anyone is interested.
