Gunmen have attacked the Paris office of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, killing 11 people and injuring 10, French officials say.
Witnesses spoke of sustained gunfire at the office as the attackers opened fire with assault rifles before escaping.
President Francois Hollande said there was no doubt it had been a terrorist attack "of exceptional barbarity".
A major police operation has been launched in the Paris area to catch the attackers.

Every now and again, these barbaric mother fuckers remind me what a delicate and politically fragile world we live in. It also brings home the concern that these bastards are living among us all, armed to the hill with powerful weapons.

On a related note, I have repeatedly been sickened by the arrogant stance taken by the magazine Charlie Hebdo. They repeatedly publish mocking cartoons of the prophet Muhammad, which in a free country is their right, but they have repeatedly done it despite French government pleas that it endangers French citizens abroad and pours fuel on an already volatile situation. The last time they published a cartoon of The prophet in bed with a man, the French government had to close 50 overseas embassies and missions as a precaution.

As much as I worship free speech, it should not be unconditional. A magazine editor can afford 24hr protection, but ordinary people, journalists, receptionists, policemen (as above) cannot. If I knew that my words had the power to get people killed, I would avoid using them, or find another way to express myself.

I didnt know about the build up to this and from what you said it seems that they have been walking a tightrope. But as you say it's the innocents that pay the price. One of the dead is the cartoonist who was on a terrorist hit list so it was only a matter of time I guess before this was going to happen.

I would also hope this might change France's stance on keep paying ransoms, because you can't see the link it does not distract from the fact every time they pay the money is used to kill far more people, we are always hearing about the tenuous links between drugs and piracy funding terrorists but they seem to find it acceptable to pay money directly to people who will use it to train, arm and equip people to kill others.

That poor Policeman was only doing his duty and to drop a round into him like that is a cowardly act and barbaric at that, may he rest in piece and respects to all those that have lost their lives today.

It shows you that this world has come to and to allow barbaric actions like that on European soil is not on.

I agree on free speech has it's limits, and it's obviously a volatile and sensitive subject, but where does it stop?

They tell people not to mention Muhammed in anyway, if you do people die.
They tell people not to say anything negative about Islam, if you do, people die.
They tell people to convert to Islam, people don't, you die.

I wonder how many people understand that this is a realistic threat, perhaps not in this century, but fast forward X amount of years. If we've not been killed by a killer outbreak of crabs, giant hornets or politicians, countries may look a whole lot different, all in the name of modern terrorism.

The world is a dangerous enough place with infections, greed and anarchy, add religious nutters into that, and the danger grows exponentially by method of violence, murder and a new era genocide.
