    Tech Look at my dongles!

A friend and I have both recently decided to go travelling in my VW campervan around the country. I've fitted a mains power source to it so we can use our laptops but we're going to need internet. I'm thinking dongles unless theres a better solution, or even one dongle and linking the pc's. This journey has a starting point and that's it, no itinerary, so we could be gone for weeks but a contract longer than a month shouldn't be necessary.

    So yeah, internet solutions please?

Any other ideas also accepted, we have a 22" TV, fan heater, will have a CD player and have arranged to meet several ladies on our journey

    Thanks to Mule

Got a 3 prepay dongle that has been used over the years when broadband has gone down or between switching contracts e.t.c
Just topped it up a tenner when needed which lasts a month and was surprised at how reliable and reasonably quick it was.

Still sitting in a drawer somewhere for the next cockup by talktalk/plusnet/bt e.t.c or whoever I am with at the time.

So how are the prices on them and can you still get them?

Generator would be too much weight, too much cost, and we'll be getting our leccy from campsites. I tried looking it up and still have no idea what a ghillie kettle is, I was planning either a small electric oven or a camping gas stove, or both. Solar power won't be necessary, as we'll stop in campsites with electric hookups. But thanks for the suggestions

If you get a myfi you can share one SIM card with multiple devices so it will cater for both of you. You might also want to see if your phone and contract support tethering, if they do then you don't need anything else but make sure you have sufficient data on your mobile contract.

    Thanks to evilsatan

I'm considering installing a permanent internet setup in a car to help with work.

I've got a laptop with a built in dongle, but sometimes I end using more than one laptop, would be nice to be able to wirelessly print, etc.

What I'm considering is to repurpose an old laptop with a faulty gfx chipset and no lcd panel (worth about £20 tops), into a router. Initially the idea is to put one 3g card and one wifi card, so this device will be able to use 3G to get internet, then it can be used as a wired or wireless router.

What I'm considering is to get a 12VDC to 19.5VDC convertor to power the laptop to save converting from DC to AC back to DC again. Also I've heard cheap inverters can do funky things on the output side when the power supply gets low. This will be linked to a custom made circuit that will turn it on and off with the ignition switch, with an override capability.

Then if it all works nicely it will be upgraded. Upgrade will involve a switch, two long range wifi routers, then the internal wifi card can be removed and replaced with another 3G card allowing it to automatically change between networks in bad signal areas.

I'm guessing the fully specced option which should get me a few wired ports and massive wifi range can be done for £100 or less, but probably is about a day or twos work.

2 Thanks given to Over Carl

Mate, I love your ingenuity. It's beyond my capability but sounds fantastic if you can get it working.

That looks great BUT £80 for 100mb is not good. With two computers even being careful we will hammer that.

Yup, I think evilsatan suggested similar. Unfortunately I don't know if my phone (k800i) is going to be capable of that, I'm yet to speak to my travelling companion about their phone to see if that would be better.

The MiFi is by far your best option. Whenever we go anywhere I just put my SIM in it and everybody has internet access over WiFi. I have a good data plan though with 3 that has tethering allowed.

Add a Yagi outdoor antenna to a mifi & wifi device will as Evil says be your best option then its just case of getting best sim deal you can find or using existing sim in it if that allows tethering

also as mentioned before if you can "borrow" a cloud or bt wifi account that will also come in handy

    Thanks to Mobileman
