Best 7" tablet?

I've had 2nd generation Kindle Fire for a few years now and it's starting to show its age and there's fuck all on the Amazon app store compared to Google play. What's the best 7" tablet to get at the minute? I was thinking about the Nexus 7 but it seems to be getting some negative reviews after the latest update. Is that still the case? What are your thoughts?

Nexus 7 is a great tablet mate. And the new fix seems to have sorted things out at least on my 1st gen 7.

Android 5.0.2 update mate. Mine's running just like it used to.

Yeah but I don't want to be stuck with the Amazon app store. Can you load your a custom rom onto it?

Not sure if the HDX is the same but I installed the Google Play store on my sons Kindle HD after rooting it. Some apps just will not install or run but in the main it's ok.
