Will be looking to add to the ram first I thing, but was wondering if I can add an 8gb stick to the 4 thats in, or does it need matched pairs?

Will also be looking at getting some WD Reds for this and in the future putting a xeon cpu in it.

Im still not sure how to tackle the hard drive situation. With my current drives formatted in Mac OS Extended, what will be the best way to get the data off these drives and onto the storage in the Gen8?

    Thanks

Matched pairs is good practice but not a requirement in most devices. How many slots does it have? Matched pairs are good if you have dual channels. If there are 4 slots and its dual channel put the 8GB in A1 or B1 and the 4GB in the other.

Assuming you have a Mac just connect the Mac to a smb/afs share on the server and copy paste the data through the network. Preferably wired via a gigabit switch.

Next at time the cashback is on I will probably get the gen8, want to try esxi out.

Unmatched in these not a problem I had 1 8GB and one 2GB stick in mine worked just fine although I guess better to have matched - now have 2 8GB sticks in

Much did you pay for the G2020t? - thought the only difference was the processor + 2GB RAM which does not appear to be that much better http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Pentiu...Celeron-G1610T RAM in a non point as you will end up sticking 16GB in it anyway. 1TB drives are of no use really get full real quick and pretty cheap.

Oh missed the bit about the price still reckon I would would have gone for the G1610T for the money then upgraded from there . . .

Great bit of kit though love mine - does everything I want no problems

My work actually paid for this for me to use as a "training tool" so I can learn ESXi so went for something I could use out the box and not have to throw any extra money to it

Still need to get it to 8gb ram as ESXi 5.5 needs 8gb to install!

It also came with the DVD Drive which I may take out, but has the SATA connection all ready connected to the floppy power so no adaptor needed if putting an SSD in there to boot from

iLo is great, was setting stuff up using my iPhone before!!

Going to have a proper play with it tomorrow and hopefully can mod ESXi to install with only 4gb ram to piss about with until i upgrade the ram

    Thanks

Got to play with this last night, managed to get ESXi 5.5 installed with 4gb ram, just booted to the installer instead of using the HP tool, hit alt+f1 on the ex welcome page and changed a file to make it accept the 4gb

I do have an 8gb stick coming today from Amazon so will put that in there when it arrives.

Managed last night to install XPEnology however only gave the image for it 8gb. Is there any way to make it see the rest of my data store, or will i need to change the disk size in esxi?

Currently installing windows 2012 on another virtual, then going to have a go at installing OS X 10.10 on it

    Cheers

Hi all, new to the forum but this post caught my eye...

I am now banging my head on my desk....

I have been puzzling over a similar dilemma for a couple months, I even got a couple HP DL380 G5 from work fully loaded for nothing and was tempted to use them at home for various things like this, but the noise and power would be an issue.

So I just brought a custom PC a few days ago fully loaded to install either Windows 2008 R2 or Windows 2012 R2 and use hyper V or use VMware workstation on it, if only I see this earlier I would have looked at the HP micro server, did not even know you could get something like that from HP, and I only really buy HP servers for all our offices.

/still banging head on my desk while typing this.....

the microserver doesn't really have enough juice to power loads of vm's....your best with the custom box, the microserver can be slow when configuring them.

i put server 2012 on my whitebox, and running 7 or 8 vm's on an SSD. all good. everything runs fast as fook, especially win10

Those DL380's would have worked a treat too, but they are noisy alright

Crazy cheap, much better server than the G7 even if it is disk less.

If if not true ly custom and bought over the interweb you've got a cooling off period to send back. Think it's 14 days you have to notify them by (not even send it back).

    Hi
then when you get the money back you can easily replace the duel core celeron in the 1155 socket to a Xeon e3 1220L and upgrade the memory and u can do anything with.
    LS
P.S. although I am confused as the table shows this as a massive upgrade - however this doesnt ===> http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-E...Celeron-G1610T
