I would use Clonezilla to make a full image backup. If you want ongoing backups then you can use Rsync which syncs folders.

I use Crashplan and it works absolutely fine, if you have a mate or a family member where you could store an external hard drive for example then it's free, I backup to the cloud and have over 1TB, I recently had to restore 133GB of photos and it worked like a treat.

    Thanks to chesser

I am looking to back up me laptop/desktop to me raided microserver which has TB's of space anyhow. So it is free for this, you only pay if you want to use their cloud for storage then?

To get it to back up to my Microserver do I need to install it on both machines and is it the same install to host the back ups as well as the client side?
as I put it on me laptop and went to computers tab and it says I can back up just to my laptop :-S

I know I could read the instructions/help and find out but more fun this way ;-)

Yes almost like a client server relationship as a unique code is generated for each client that the server knows about to make the secure connection..

    Thanks to chesser
