Default Probably need a new PC but just checking

My PC wouldn't power on yesterday, I cleared it of static and removed the cmos battery for a few moments but still nothing. I thought it's probably the power unit so I removed it and went looking for a replacement in PC world. While chatting to the tech guy he checked my power unit by attaching a paper clip to two leads as a jumper and the fan started up. He said the power unit is fine but in that case my motherboard is probably fried.

The PC is 6 years old so I'll probably need a new one but is the guy correct or is there something else I can try?

You can try repeating the same test but with another power supply, but I doubt it will do different.

Do you have a manual for your motherboard ? Because you could also try to reset the jumpers on the board

Just because the psu starts like that doesn't mean it's ok, try another if you can get hold of one, try shorting the power button wires to rule the switch out.

Was about to say same as above if nothing from pressing the power button but there is from shorting the relevant pins it sounds that at least the power button isn't connected/is faulty.

did you have it hooked up to a monitor or anything when you jumped it to see if it started booting?
