    Question Working Windows Server Activator

I've been given an old server by a mate who was having a spring clean. I've installed VMware ESXi on it and I have a couple of 2008 server installs plus some Win7 client installs for testing and playing around with some server stuff that I can't easily test at work.

I have the old Win7 Loader but can't find anything to reliably activate the server os. As I'm going to be playing with these on and off over time, I'd rather activate them and only rebuild them when necessary.

There seems to be quite a few activators out there, I've tried about 4 versions of KMS Pico and a couple of others this evening but none of them seem to fully work.

I just wondered what everyone else is using, or if someone could PM me a link to something realiable please?

I did try a few other builds of this earlier and they didn't work - Error: Activate 8007232B Windows Server

....but I'm just letting this one run it's course now so hopefully it will do the trick

I'd already jumped the gun and ran KMSPico first so I've just removed it, reinstalled, ran AutoPico and am waiting for the box to come back up. It's an old Poweredge 2800 so it takes a few minutes to bounce it

I'm guessing that 2800 is probably using SCSI drives rather than SAS.

Just do a little bit of testing and you will probably wondering why on earth is your disk access (which means your whole computer (or VM's)) are so slow.

Multiple VM's and slow hard drives don't get on well.

It seem to have got a step further as it's now showing "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" in the Service_KMS log. A quick Google suggests this error is .Net related.

I've tried it on both 2008 servers which are running the latest .Net 4.5.2. KMSPico says that it needs .Net 4.0 so I'll downgrade it and then see what happens then.

The tool looks good mate, it's probably something silly that preventing it from activating. Thanks again for helping out though mate

I'm actully surprised at how well it runs for an old timer - dual processor Xeons @ 2.8GHz, 5GB ram and 4 74GB SCSI drives. I've got the drives in RAID 1+0 and they all work pretty well except when its under load like it is now because I've got another server plus 2 clients running on there. The console is a bit slow but via RDP its spot on. I wish it had SAS but it was a freebie and is just for testing stuff at home that I can't easily tinker with at work so it should help me out with what I need.

The main thing when I first got it was the noise. My Mrs went nuts! It's got nearly 10 fans inside and can apparently shift 150 cubic feet or air per minute [I think]. Updated it to the latest BIOS and gave it a good clean and it's nice and quiet now though

    Thanks to AP0ll0UK

    It could be worse.

I saw a set of 1855 blades cheap (at the time, still about £2.5k worth back then). The idea was I could simulate most of the work servers at home. When I powered up the enclosure at home I realised what a mistake I had made.

The sad thing is I didn't do anything with that set apart from sell it about 2 years later for £650.

LOL We live and learn mate - kind of

Mine is going to live in the spare room out of the way. And because it's an old box and isn't particularly efficient then it will only be on when I'm playing with it.

It's been quite good so far as I've had a play around with ESXi which I haven't done for a few years. The box only supports up to ESXi v4.1 but that's enough for what I need. Once I get the servers setup fully then its going to help me a lot for testing stuff for a few customers network's that I manage, and hopefully helping me to get my head around some stuff that I'm definately going to need for my next job.

    Thanks to AP0ll0UK

I was reading about SLIC in VMware bios yesterday, didn't get far as I don't have esxi but when I upgrade my microserver I will probs give it a go. Obv not as straightforward as a loader but interesting if you like experimenting.

I've used slic on Hyper-V and it works a treat, if the same can be done on VMware then I'd definately go that route.

Can you point me in the direction of any decent docs please? I had a quick Google but came across Pheonix bios mods and all sorts so I could do with having a bit more of a read first.

Thanks, had a quick skim and seems like a lot of useful info and files on there. I need to understand a more about what it is and what it does before I have a play around with some of the files. I might have a server and some drives in Raid but I'm not doing tape backups [unfortunately] so I don't want to trash everything.
