    Info De-Solder charging port

Hi guys just looking for a bit of advice if anyone can help please.

Charging port on my g/f samsung R730 has stopped working so i have obtained a replacement but im buggered if i can desolder the one that is on the MB. After trying for ages and borrowing a second soldering iron, incase mine was just rubbish, I have now given up.
Im going to take it to some place i think but no idea what i should be paying and dont want to get screwed over. It literally will be a case of desolder the 7 points on the board as i have everything apart so will just be taking the board in any idea what i should be looking at?

    Thanks

silver based solder is a nightmare most things i use an smd heat gun..
but what you could try if u havnt already get some braid and a bit of flux cover the braid with flux.
get some new solder and add a little bit to each pin then go over it again with the braid to remove it. it seems mad adding more but it seems to melt easier when you do it this way

My advice is to let someone else do it before you kill it.
I have seen so many people kill xbox pcbs by trying too much.

    Where are you in uk?

Nightmare job, £40-60 would be what I would expect depending on the time taken. I usually try to break the port apart so I am able to remove the pins individually then clean up the area before installing the replacement.

Shops charge £50-£90 for the job, I usually charge £45, £20 to strip and assemble the laptop, £20 to do the job and £5 for the jack,
Like evil says, I usually break the old one off, the power pins are easy to desolder but the mounting ones need a good iron as they soak up the heat.

I'm not stupid with computers but I've come to the conclusion I shouldn't even attempt repairs on PCB's with tiny connections.

Destroyed many things but fixed very little.

I repaired my first DC jack when I was about 16, was so proud when it worked as I thought I had ruined it. Done a fair few since without fail but I struggled with replacing a micro-USB port on a smartphone a couple of years back. The motherboard was so thin it warped and I must have killed some components with heat or broken some tracks as the new port didn't work. Phone was fine so used an external battery charger with a spare battery. Nowadays I try to steer clear from component repairs on iPods/smartphones as the boards are too thin.

Depends on the time tbh mate, even stripped I would say £35-40 purely based on the time it can take to get the old one off without damaging the laptop.

    Thanks to evilsatan

Crush the old port with a pair of pliers , till all the plastic is removed and the contacts are visible
use a 30watt or hotter iron if you don't have hot air . Then with a hair dryer heat the board round the area of the plug most but not just ,heat the whole board but blast the area about the plug .

Apply flux at both sides then flood the pin with solder , be patient and let the heat conduct , shake the pin with a pair of long nose pliers till you fell it move , then pull it out , remember your working on a sandwich board so make sure it's lose
Before you pull it or you will pull the core out with the pin .

If I sit the board on my pre heater I can blow most of the solder out with a fine nosel on my hot air station
    in about 10 mins ..

You sound like a mate of mine who is shit hot at this kind of stuff and had all the kit. The annoying thing is sometimes the way he makes it look so easy make me feel silly.

However, the time taken to get to the part surely must add to the bill which will vary with laptop. Just for example I've sworn never to mess with a sony laptop after one that was the biggest pita ever to open and put back together again.

Your spot on taking to pieces is the worse part of any lappy repair , sonys tend to just fall to bits on there own lol
The old think pads where the best to work on with the screw map on the bottom and built proof housing and hinges .

Agreed! TJ got me out of a jam once when I totalled my Xbox PCB!

My mistake was one of those shitty £12 soldering irons you can get from Maplins!
