Help Attach a Cigarette Lighter USB Phone charger to an interior light.

My Ford Mondeo has a AUX cable tucked into my headlining and runs all the way from my rear view mirror, round to the back of my glove box where the AUX/Line In lives for my stereo (yeah, only found that recently!)

I now want to charge my phone from the same location, but am getting sick of the wire draping all over the gear stick and hanging from my phone.

So, as per the thread title, I have one of these, but plan on getting a more powerful 1.5A one...
The screw appears to be for show, it just spins, so the only way to take this thing apart is to smash it by the looks.

I want to wire it in to the permanent live in the roof lining that runs to the interior light.
Is this something that can easily be done? I'm OK with a multimeter and a step above novice with a soldering iron (Ay TJ!)

Anyone attempted similar or has a better solution? I'd love to hear it. (Wish I had Bluetooth!)

I can't see it being a problem, might need to change the fuse for that circuit though. Check the voltage is 12v, the adapter should do the conversion to 5v, not sure if you need to check the amps.

Would be cool to use Waze as your navigation, I only found out about it recently and had already invested in an integrated sat nav so I have iGo, it does have TMC (I haven't activated it though) but Waze is more effective.

I ran a long cable from the cigerette power socket for my camera. I ran it under the carpet and then just tucked it behind the trim around the door, then up the a pillar then into the roof lining. Didn't need to wire anything in and the cable is hidden.

as long as you not charging an iPhone as the charger would need to have a 2.0A output you should be fine

Run something to glovebox? Seen a few motors with chargers in there.

I have some step down boards if you want one?
i can connect a usb to it or just leave open cable if you like?

just connect it to a 12v power source and it puts out 5v (adjustable) I think it's round about 2a but more than enough to charge a phone and run a sat nav.

Can I connect that to the interior light connection easy enough? That looks a lot neater!

As long as you have a positive feed there then yes.
as a step down it won't draw fuck all current so you can stick em almost anywhere.

Just had a look on eBay and it looks like you can buy better than mine for under £3 delivered.
Just search for 12v to 5v they come in nice tidy little pre cabled boxes.

    Did you buy one?
i did just to check the current drain on it!

£2 is a bargain how the hell do they make money from that.
postage to UK must be more than that.
