EEEEP! This is a bit close to my commute!
Train tracks appeared to spark and explode in front of shocked commuters waiting at a south east London station during this morning's rush hour.
The bright flashes of light were compared to a firework display by passengers as a train bound for Crayford pulled into New Eltham station just before 7.40am today.
A spokeswoman for Southeastern trains said there was no actual explosion but the incident was caused by a break between two conductor rails which saw sparks fly from the ground.
She said: “It was an issue with the infrastructure of the station. There was a broken rail there that caused electrical arching between the rail and another piece of equipment.”
Train services running from Hither Green to Dartford were temporarily suspended while engineers were at the scene.
Witnesses posted photographs and videos of the incident on social media websites.
One Twitter user wrote: “Wow actual fireworks on the train track at #NewEltham station just then”, while others questioned whether they should still board trains.
