Star Trek - Where to start

My daughter who enjoys Doctor Who has mentioned an interest in seeing some Star Trek but the question is where to start:
Classic
Next Gen
Movies (if so which one)
Enterprise

I am thinking about starting with the reboot movie but am curious to what other people think.

as a massive trek fan the last thing i would do is show her the new films first - if you do that then she will think the series are guff compared to the eye catching over the top, overly used lens flares style of the new movies.

start her off with the TNG - and the movies up until first contact. If she likes that show her DS9 and then the movies first contact and after.

TOS and VOY are like marmite - you either love them or hate them and if you show her them first and she hates them it will put her off watching the others.

Just my opinion though :-)

I would go through in order TOS is a classic and sets the scene and the TNG is a great continuation.

Don't bother with Kirk, skip straight to Picard and Janeway ;-)

I wouldn't bother with Kirk for a kid, it's too dated imo. TNG was a great series and even that looks old now, then either Voyager or DS9.

I've been going through them all fairly recently, I've done DS9, and I'm currently on season 3 of Enterprise.
It's been so long since I have seen them, its almost like watching brand new episodes sometimes.
I would say skip DS9 seasons 1-3 as it was garbage until they got the Defiant and started leaving the station. The later seasons were ace when it was all about the war.
Enterprise, quite a lot didnt like it, but I do. I dont even mind the theme tune which most people got upset about.

Again, wouldn't bother with TOS as she will be put off totally.

Good think, I remember back in the day a friend lending my VHS episodes he'd got sent form the US with the lastest episodes.

Tng is an excellent series. 194 episodes or something from memory and that will keep her going for a bit. My favourites are the Q ones.

The original series first, more specifically the first series (before all the budget cuts) - simple in style but not in storylines. The first series deals heavily with morality and equality. Some real heart-warming episodes in there, which may be more similar to Doctor Who. It is leaps and bounds ahead of everything else of its time. I'm baffled every time I go back to watch it. It LOOKS dated (the remastered series helps this ALOT), but its material is certainly not, however it is in no way an action show. Its probably the most child-friendly series in the sense it has a lot of light moments and zero gore. Plus, who doesn't love Spock? If its not her cup of tea maybe move on to the 2nd and 3rd series as the scripts deteriorate but they become a bit sillier which might be fun?

For a young'un Next gen will probably be the easiest watch (cue Data and Worf) as the characters become more alien. Episodes have individual story-lines (easy to follow) and dabbles with 'sillies' fairly often and might be good for a Who fan. Plus theres a fair amount of action for those who struggle with quieter/slower shows.

First Contact is an outstanding film, but might be a bit scary depending on her age. But generally I would watch the films and series in order (except for DS9) and burn the new films with fire/acid.

Probs skip DS9 for the time being as its more about story arks and may not hold attention the same way the others do (although 'modern fans' i.e. people who did not grow up watching star trek, seem to get into DS9 quite a bit). Voyager next. Although Janeway is a bore (good captain but), its a very well rounded series.

Then DS9. Totally different to the other three. Its more like a gritty action series than the others but has some really great characters and has a very different feel. Actually, if she's a teen maybe this series could be good.

Enterprise is a bit slow but it has its good points, much quieter than DS9. This last (but there is so much before it she may never get round to it).

Having said all this, although Star Trek is great its different to Doctor Who (very) and she may not enjoy any of the series.

I think whilst first contact might be one of the better films, star trek iv is the easiest watch, especially for a kid.

Nemesis is also a great film.

Enterprise is massively underrated in my opinion. Seasons 3 and 4 were outstanding, especially the Xindi season-long story arc.

Enterprise does get a lot better from Series 3, but in a Dirty Harry kind of way, where ethics kind of go out of the window.
