Help Cheap box to stream XBMC

Looking for a cheap box (pi?) to install xbmc/kodi on too for our bedroom. First though was Pi, but was wondering if there were any other alternatives which will stream 1080p?

Has to be cheap and idiot proof to install xbmc/kodi on too?

    Cheers

I've bought 3 Q7s from aliexpress recently to install kodi. Plenty there and expect to pay $45. http://www.aliexpress.com/af/xbmc.ht...ewCP=y&catId=0

Get the Pi 2 chap - just installed Plex but you can get XBMC (now called Kodi) and its a doddle to set up - just download the image to the Micro SD card and boot it up - it will play 1080p as well.

i had plex server for a while on my REVO downstairs, i now have it running in the background so my mates can access my media. However the Windows 8 Plex player App, caused issues for me during playback so now I have Kodi installed, and i think its ten times better than plex.

Didnt realise the PI 2 was so cheap these days! Ill grab that an a micro sd card and a case and ill be sorted :-)

I've had a AppleTV2 for a while and find it a little unstable with xbmc. I'd be interested in a 1020p PI2 if you could receive good prem footy streams on it?

so i have opted for a Pi 2, with a white case, power supply, micro sd card with NOOBS installed, and a 10m lan cable for connecting it all - not bothered about wifi to be honest.

are there any decent remote controls for the pi 2?

Use the remote from your tv it should work fine over HDMI using a standard called CEC.

Streams are streams mate. I used raspbmc for years and then it killed a perfectly good USB 3 stick, I stopped using it when I bought an android box from China for £30. Better ones are available, obviously. If you're starting from scratch again vs. a pi 2 you wouldn't need a power supply (I paid £12 for their recommended powered usb hub) SD card (and USB stick for smoother running), case if you feel you need one and you'll most likely already have a hdmi lead anyway. I went off raspbmc when Sam Nazarko moved on to OSMC and released some dedicated new hardware for it. I know it runs on other devices but as far as I could tell OSMC was aimed to create a marketplace.

so would you avoid OSMC and stay with Raspbmc on the pi 2 then?

I've got not experience of OSMC, I thought from reading the raspbmc forum that development would stop on that and concentrate on the former. I had some good use of raspbmc on the pi but I'm on something else for the time being. There's always openelec for the pi http://openelec.tv/get-openelec I have some credit in my farnell account I might try it out. As far as I remember the raspbmc builds are full Linux installs and openelec is a stripped down leaner version. I know stuff all about Linux though so that could be complete bollocks or outdated.

As beansontoast (I'm hungry now) has already said, use your TV remote - I had doubts mine would work but it's fantastic through HDMICEC. If you are looking to just stream media from one room to another, then stick with Kodi - just make sure you get the Pi2 build.

ill need to check if tv in the bedroom is HDMI-CEC compatible. Its an old samsung but i will check when i get home.

When you say stick with Kodi - im assuming you mean go for an OS that has Kodi installed - like OpenElec or OSMC? im just a starter at all of this so sorry if i am a bit clueless....

The easiest way to install Kodi on an R-Pi is to use one of these pre-made OS/Kodi packages:

The windows 8 Plex app has always been crap. Use Plex home theater on windows 8 and all is fine.

Yes, soz mate - try all of them and see which one suits.

As your catalogue of software grows, you might end up doing what I do - I can't be arsed with deleting files from Micro SD cards any more and wondering which card has what, so I bought a shitload of cheap 8GB cards and write a number on in tippex and make a note of what each card has. I bought them each for about £2.49 delivered I think.

Once you've had a play, let us know how you get on.

    Thanks to crazyal

    Goose,

I have just finished setting up an openelec PI 2 Kodi. I am amazed at what content you can get from these. Clearly downloading from newsgroups is so last season!

    I have this remote http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-Remote...item20f3bf8026

Which is ok but a little slow and frustrating.. so I have started using this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Measy-RC8-...item54100e3b43

    The latter is far better.
