    Default Laying a Shed base

Well, not technically a shed base but a Bike storage unit. This thing weighs 21 stone and requires a good solid base to go on (50mm thick slabs for bolting it down onto also).

The size of the base I'm laying is going to be 10ft (3048mm) by 3.9ft (600mm) and is going to be simple council concrete paving slabs (600x600x50mm)

As I understand, I need to dig out maybe 3" deep and lay a 8:1 ratio mix of Sand:Cement to about 2" deep, then lay the slabs on top and level with a rubber mallet.

My question is, how much sand and cement am I likely to need to fill in an area of 10ft (120") x 3ft 9" (47") x 3". I don't want to go and buy a shit load of sand/cement and end up with a shit load left...

    Cheers

If you do a search for concrete calculator they work out how much per size you require, I'll try to find the one I used for you

    Thanks Ashley.

Just before I start putting figures in, It looks like that calculator is for making up a batch of concrete for a complete concrete base. I'm going to be laying pre-made flags. The flags I'm getting are 600x600x50mm of which I'll have x 10 so I need to know how much sand and cement I'd need for the "bed" so to speak.

Thanks again for your help and future replies

i lay concrete for a living why don't you just lay a base off 4" off concrete on a hardcore base his is what we do for driveway. it would be a lot cheaper than slabs and stronger
1 cubic metre covers 10 sq metre at 4" deep

    Thanks Bryan,

To be honest, not overly worried about the cost and would prefer to have slabs....or shall we say, it's her indoors that would prefer the slabs . Once the storage unit is on there, I don't see it being something that could degrade the slabs.

    It's this one.

Make sure you lay the dampy right between the base and the wood or it will rot within a year .

Looks like is pretty much made from metal from the pics on the link so doubt it will rot ;-)

Hehe yeah this is made from Galvanised steel so unless it takes damage to the paint and coating, it won't rust.

Just this week I was looking at getting a decked area but live in a rental property. Look up Dek Blocks (There are other makes). They look a lot easier than concreting an area and may work out significantly cheaper!

Thanks EB. Looking at Dek Blocks, they seem to be solely for wooden decking. The base needs to be solid stone / concrete. I'm going to grab ten of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/17098...14=108&ff19=0#

I'll look around of course for a cheaper price for the same flags. As said, it's just a case of working out how much sand and cement I'd need to create the bed for these to sit on.

Just buy a few extra from somewhere like Wickes, take back what you don't use. If your short on the day its no hardship to send the missus up there to get some more.

    Thanks to lagigolo
