That Microsoft is cooking up extremely cheap notebooks is nothing new, but a new report claims that when it comes to Windows 10 laptops, the company has a new figure in mind.

A ridiculously low one at just $149 / £99

Apparently Google and friends (companies like ASUS and more) are ready to unleash Chromebooks based on the low-cost Rockchip RK3288 platform — and these devices will hit store shelves anytime now, with estimated prices of in and around the $179 / £120 mark.

Maybe even lower, if things go their way.

And in order to counter these highly affordable Chromebooks, Microsoft is now said to be working with hardware partners to launch Windows 10 powered solutions under the magical $150 / £100 mark.

These are to be powered by the Intel Bay Trail-T platform, and Redmond plans to offer these budget notebooks to both educational and consumer markets.

Interestingly, while most of these devices are expected to come with 11.6-inch display sizes, we may well see some sport 13.3-inch and 15.6-inch models thrown into the mix.

The report claims that the first of these Windows 10 laptops are expected to hit retail sometimes around the middle of 2015.

Back to School season, then.
