Well, that’s a refreshing surprise. Microsoft appeared to have selected the first batch of devices that will be receiving Windows 10 for Phones Preview at launch, and it’s a blend of old and new.

Mostly old, but the HTC One M8 is a relatively contemporary addition here.

This report has a few interesting details for the first wave of handsets that are in line to receive the preview version in the coming weeks. It’s by no means exhaustive, as Gabriel Aul recently confirmed that Microsoft is also testing a 512MB device for this first batch.

As in the Lumia 520.

That should help integrating the preview version with low end hardware, paving the way for inclusion of more such handsets in the next wave — which probably is not that far off.

But owners of the Lumia 1020, Lumia 1520 and HTC One M8 for Windows should be in luck.

Not to say that this first version does not come with a bucketload of bugs. In fact, the abovementioned report claims that the technical preview of Windows 10 for Phones currently suffers from a whole bunch of issues and bugs from animations that are not smooth to battery drain.

The more pressing of these is also the fact that devices got hot, even when doing simple tasks like making phone calls.

Nothing surprising here, considering this is the first preview version of a new mobile operating system, meaning we are dealing with code that is not yet optimized.

But hey, if you are a daredevil and own any of these above devices, then you probably want in regardless. Just make sure you back up you handsets first before deploying the preview version of Windows 10 for Phones.
