    Buying New Laptop Ideas Needed

    1.
My current Laptop is dying. Despite making moves to rectify this, I am still looking at getting the missus a msall laptop of her own. I am currently looking at the Asus models
    http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptop...pdt.html#cat-0
    http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptop...pdt.html#cat-0

The missus uses for general internet and small works. Anyone used these, has these. Is it best to pay for the extra screen size of stick small for the small £200 price tag? Win 8 is putting me of, but seems little I can do and I cannot let that be a show stopper.

    2.
Saving more and going for something with HDMI out. But not sure where to start on this.

Models I am not keen on are, HP, Lenovo, due to past experience. Any pointers greatly welcome.

    Cheers.....Q

Refurbished Lenovo Thinkpad x220 would be my choice, small, reliable, powerful amd meets your budget. 3000rpm are one company who I have used in the past or you can take a gamble on eBay.

    Thanks to evilsatan

Missus uses Lenovo for work and neither of us like that brand. I will search for that and thanks for the web site. I was not intending on buying from pcworld, often use it as a base and go in to see the hard goods.

Would recommend you steer clear of HP. Had a couple and vowed to never buy again. Loads of overheating issues e.t.c
Burn out GPU's quickly and they weren't even used for hardly any gaming.

Also Acer laptop died whilst under warranty and they tried very, very hard not to honor and repair laptop. Only when I contacted Head Office with letters from trading standards did they back down. They tried saying I had spilt coffee on it which was bullshit.

Anyway just a couple of experiences worth considering.

    Thanks to piggzy

HP is not on my radar, dads had those and issues each time. But still persists. I have had consistently good experiences with Asus hardware and hoping this will be the same for thier laptops. But, as we are just considering a budget laptop with keyboard, I think this is best places.

What are the odds. Just received this in some junk mail.

    http://www.cclonline.com/product/127...500GB/NOT9516/

Dunno if its any good mind. They also had a 15.6" ASUS on same site for £30 over your budget.

    Thanks to piggzy

Personally I'm a fan of their kit, I'm pretty sure ES is as well as he seems to pop up in most Lenovo threads I post in

The x220 suggested by ES is a very good laptop for the money it can bought for these days.

Personally I would have also recommended a Lenovo or HP Elitebook.

At home I have also have a dell latitude e5550. Which has been solid despite dell not really being a favourite of mine.

That though is hardly used now I have my Microsoft surface...

Does she use a Thinkpad or another line of Lenovo laptop? If for work then I suspect it's a thinkpad, they look ugly but are more robust than other laptops. The only criticism I read about Thinkpads is the touchpad, I think it's since they added the dimples. Some Thinkpads are not quite the same league as others now, I think they tried to exploit the brand a bit by adding entry level business laptops for a few hundred quid new whereas proper thinkpads tend to retail for £600-1500 new. My last laptop was a T410 bought on here, my current laptop is a T430.

Lenovo, yes it is a thinkpad. She goes through one a year usually at about 9 months she has a rebuild, never the same and struggles until they agree, she is on her 6th one now in 6 years. I might entertain research myself, although not sure if I would be leaned on, but even the sight of that name sends her into a tail spin.

Might be more a case of her companies IT and their images on the thinkpads. An old work one I had appeared slow, clunky and crashed from time to time. After work changed it and let me have it for next to fuck all, I pulled the drive, replaced with an SSD and its been one of the best laptops I've ever had! That was an X230, and mother has it now.

i use a lenovo thinkpad x200 tablet at work for diagnostics (and keeping up to date with DF )
i have a 256gb ssd, 8gb ram, win7 64bit on it and it runs all the stuff i have ever needed for my job and its coped very well with being in a busy motorcycle repair workshop

i think i paid about £120 for it about 3 years ago - without the ssd or ram obviously.
i liked it so much, i bought another one for home, which i have now upgraded to the same spec

Reading that it looks like the downfall is a pitifully slow CPU. Shame cos the rest of the specs looked good for the money

Can only ever comment on Acer's, had an Aspire 5536 for circa 7+ years.

Really do need a new one as need USB 3.0 and a faster CPU etc. But this has taken a beating, gets wiped every year and can still handle 3GB 1080p video's well, especially on HDMI out.

Mate , if you think that the wife's thinkpads problems are hardware related your wrong .
ill bet you a pound to a penny it's still in one peice , most of these boards in laptops are not too far from
reference , so it's the price point , cheep parts and cheep construction . The hinges on thinkpads are a credit to IBM .

the lts you posted are rubbish to be totally honest .

plug1, not overly concerned what the underlying problem(s) have been for the missus. I dont doubt you are right however, I am fed up with the moans (and not of any decent kind) that I get when she continues to struggle. Company IT mentioned above I do think has a great deal to do with issues not being properly overcome and then compounding. All she does is MS office work.

Not sure what you mean by lts?

    Cheers.....Q

Scan have a selection of laptops/notebooks on their today only section. Although it's not exactly what you're looking for, they are also selling the ASUS T100TA tablet/laptop (refurbished) for £181 - comes with Office 2013.

I've just picked up an HP Elitebook 8470p on ebay for £230 delivered.
Core i5, 4GB RAM, 320GB WD Black Drive , with WIn7 Pro x64. No webcam - but that's ok for me.

I can't recommend it enough. It looks great too.

My wife has the HP Elitebook 6930p she still has it over 2 years bought 2nd hand on ebay for £140.

Also as others have said before the Lenovo X series are excellent too, the X201,X220, X230 etc.

Some of the Dell E series are good, but they tend to look ugly IMO.

Stay clear of the laptops at <£250 that are brand new unless you want a chromebook of course....

and stay clear of AMD cpu's in the laptops....
