Personally I've been using my old iphone 4 jailbroken and installed tomtom europe on it. Took everything else, hid all the icons with bg tools and its been mint.
I bought the tomtom car kit from ebay cheap and hard wired that in to the car. Just plug the iphone in it and give it a minute or so and its fine.
A lot easier than faffing about with crappy screen mounts and cigarette socket chargers.

I've got one of the Chinese units, and its hard now to get the tomtom maps for them, got the 945 maps today with meta, fastactivate says its ok, but Chinese unit says its the wrong map
I thinking about getting a tomtom unit, much easier to get the maps and some forums do a group buy to get the maps you need
I've used the CoPilot app on my iPhone, paid 20 quid back when i had my 3GS. Does the job.
spare phone or your everyday one and this https://www.waze.com/
job done and its free

Nokia windows phone has possibly the best sat nav on any phone. "surfer dude" always gets me there.
This! Waze is crowd sourced so not only is it free with traffic routing (no need to pay for TMC), it is also more responsive to traffic reports and has camera alerts. I am a little pissed off as I bought an expensive headunit for my car that integrates with the DIS behind the steering wheel, that runs iGO which I prefer over TomTom but Waze IMO is the best product by far. It looks a little cartoony but now Google has bought it I expect they will integrate Google Maps so it looks more professional. On long journeys I have Waze on my phone to route me around traffic.

I've got TomTom and Co-pilot on Android and both are good but I've found both of them buggy and slow at times, randomly losing signal or crashing at vital times. Now I use the free Google navigation as it seems to load so much quicker and integrates with android so much better. More importantly it seems to be much more stable.
Yeah waze is good. It's not up there with tomtom in my opinion. As mickey said the new Nokia one is good Nokia HERE.
waze downfall and google maps is that they need a data connection. Tomtom and Nokia HERE don't. You just download maps when u want. Obviously Nokias is free which is a big plus. But tomtom still has been the most reliable overall system to me. Yes a pain to install if u haven't bought it on an iPhone, but it's been faultless on any pda, pna or phone I've used it on.
