Android Dual boot HP Stream 7 - Android and Win 8.1

So having got an HP Stream 7, partly to play about with and partly to replace my ageing Google Nexus 7 (2012). Since Android 5 hit the Nexus it's not been the same. There are a good few things I use the Nexus for and being a primarily iOS user, its handy to have.

Anyway, my goal was to dual boot the Stream 7 with the existing Win8.1 OS and Android.

I got myself a USB OTG cable and a 16gb USB key (Kingston SE9). I downloaded this: https://yadi.sk/d/s9sCXJRALmupY which seemed to be a tutorial and package to do just what I wanted.

It soon became apparent it was not going to be as simple as I thought to do what I wanted. Firstly the EFI on the S7 is 32 bit, not 64bit. So I made some changes to the EFI folder in the "Copy To USB" folder by getting hold of the 32bit efi boot file (bootia32.efi) and changing the grub.cfg file to have linuxefi command rather than linux. This so far booted into the menu okay, but when selecting the live Android (or any option) it errors saying "cannot find initrd", then kernal panic and reboot.

I've had various ideas on actually copying the working android partiion to the S7. Either resize the Win8.1 partition in Win8.1 to be smaller and install android to the unpartitioned space. Or use a partition manager to swap and resize from the USB. Question is getting grub to work as a bootloader on the S7 to choose the OS to boot...

So, anyone else have any luck or ideas on this?

Okay so I abandoned that tutorial. Seems it wasn't going to do the job I wanted.

So next thing I tried was pulled some Androidx86 iso's and installed them with UNetBootIn. 1 on of the three iso's I tried had an EFI folder, the others didn't. After copying to my USB and copying the EFI folder for the two images that didn't have it they all booted. Booted to a point anyway... The 5.02 one loaded the android logo, and shimmered it really slow. The two 4.4.4 ones just hung at random points.

Cant help but think I am close, and yet missing something. That or android just wont work on the S7.

Isn't x86 android a bit pointless as all the apps are written for arm anyway?

Apps should work just fine from what I can tell. Not having got an image to boot fully yet I can't tell lol.

The x86 android project surely wouldn't exist if the apps didn't work?

Saying that, the 5.02 image I made works okay on my laptop but wifi doesn't... I will try and sideload an app when i can.

I got a cheap refurb hudl2 from tesco to play with and its an atom processor .. but all the usual apps I install are working so far.
I did install the x86 version of kodi, but anything from the app store I use has worked fine.

So I think I have given up on and android windows dual boot for now. My new idea is to try and dual boot windows with Tails OS. Or any iteration of a useful Linux.

Finding the right image to use is the trick atm. Few I have tried won't boot, despite messing about with copying a 32 bit efi folder over...

Has no-one else done any hacks to this tablet?!

i havent used mine much, im waiting for Win10 to sort itself out and hopefully make the tablet experience work properly. The keys and icons are way too small on the Stream for it to work in PC mode. Even the touch mode isnt good enough on W8.1 so fingers crossed that W10 sorts it out...

I bought in at full price in PCW as the offer had endded but I had a need for one as a small dedicated server to leave on a bookshelf.

It does what I wanted it to do but would have been so much more useful if it had a separate power socket and a USB.

U can get adapter hubs to let u use USB and charge at the same time. I got one for a few quid off eGay.

So far I have got Ubuntu to run okay. Problem is the touchscreen and wifi doesn't work out of the box. I read that a USB to Ethernet adapter would get the tablet online and able to download the drivers. But I can't find mine.

Takes a while to boot the live version but it works really well.

    its not tails tho yet

When I was looking into it I think the eBay dumb splitter cables wouldn't work for charging and usb at the same time but there are microUSB hubs available that will.

By the way i have been using mine for car diagnostics. Works perfectly with VCDS talking to VAG group cars. I've even managed to read an ecu off with it but I wouldn't risk a write because of the battery and weird sleep settings

Great idea. Did you just use a usb to micro adapter for the VCDS cable?

Bought the Mrs a Teclast x98 3G Dual boot. She has had it a few months now. It's the nuts. Very fast in both Win 8.1 and Android 4.4.
For the record all apps in android work, no issues so far.

That looks alright that. I'm always dubious to by unbranded stuff usually, so I don't often look at stuff like that.

    Shows it's indeed possible though....
