BBC News Police injured in Baltimore protests

Seven Baltimore officers injured as protests turn violent

Seven police officers in Baltimore have been injured and one is "unresponsive" after protests there turned violent.
The Maryland governor has declared a state of emergency allowing for the national guard to be brought in, as violence and looting intensified.

Live video from helicopters showed a large pharmacy building on fire and dozens of people in the streets, confronting officers.
Protests have taken place since the death of Freddie Gray on 19 April.
Gray, 25, died after an encounter with police a week earlier during which he sustained serious and unexplained spinal injuries.

Monday's clashes began hours after Gray's funeral.
Baltimore Police have said that juveniles are taking part in the protests, and called on parents to find their children and return them home.
The violence "does not reflect the spirit of this movement," Pastor Jamal Bryant, an organiser of protests in previous days, said on US television.

He said members of his church are going into the area to make appeals to the protesters to go home.
Capt Eric Kowalczyk said police were attempting to take control of the situation and will deploy tear gas and "pepper balls".
"These are not protesters - these are lawless individuals," he told CNN.

Governor Larry Hogan issued an executive order to "protect the lives and property of citizens being impacted by this public emergency".
President Barack Obama told Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake that his administration would provide assistance as needed, the White House said.

Video feeds showed fire-fighters tackling a blaze at a CVS pharmacy, as well as looters ransacking a neighbourhood market, and, in a separate incident, burning a law enforcement vehicle.
Separately, protestors destroyed a police car by jumping on it and smashing the windows.

Officials said protestors have thrown bricks, rocks and other items at police officers.
Baltimore's Major League Baseball team the Orioles cancelled Monday night's game against Chicago's White Sox.

The team announced the postponement on Twitter shortly before the game was due to begin, "after consultation with the Baltimore Police Department".
Earlier in the day, a statement released by police said that its Criminal Intelligence Unit learned "that members of various gangs including the Black Guerrilla Family, Bloods, and Crips have entered into a partnership" to target officers.

The violence is an escalation of earlier protests over the weekend that turned violent.
There were 34 arrests as peaceful demonstrations by about 1,200 people outside City Hall on Saturday afternoon got out of control.
Six police officers sustained minor injuries in that episode.
