Default Simple media player using RPi?

One of my friend currently has a USB video player that recently failed, rather than replacing I thought I might put together a RPi for them to do the job.

They don't have any computers in the house, just tablets. Is it possible to make a simple remote controlled media player from an RPi? Ideally I'd like to give her that and a flash drive with video files they can simply plug in, browse one using a USB remote and play.
