Andrew Balding’s MONTALY makes his first start of the new season at Chelmsford (8.45) tonight having been withdrawn as a result of the ground at Newmarket on Sunday. He tackles a conditions event which looks a little tricky on the face of it. The 1m6f trip should be no problem for the four-year-old who was progressive last season and connections are hopeful he will make up into an Ebor horse before the end of the season. His two main rivals look to be Maid In Rio and Nearly Caught, the first of which was rapidly progressive when winning twice in a week before failing to build on that subsequently. She should have benefitted from a break and could give these something to think about if back to her best. Hughie Morrison’s Nearly Caught was sixth in the Cesarewitch on his final start last year and having run well in the Ebor prior to that, he sets a good standard. However, I feel there is a case to be made that our four-year-old could be the most progressive so I would suggest a small win bet.
