Just noticed an icon on my tray on win 8.1 machine for a free upgrade to windows 10.
Is it a free upgrade for everyone?
signed up, will see what happens now.

Guys can you do a dual boot setup with the upgrade without having to start from a scratch ? So keep win7 and put 10 on also?
Heard some decent reviews so wanted to give it a bash
not tried this method as running mine as a vm on a mac.. but looks like it should work

Taskbar properties/customize, hide on my win7 partition.
Will it work with dodgy copies of windows 8.1?

Just waiting to see what happens with SLIC activated machines, I imagined you would be asked to enter the product key from the COA before it upgrades but who knows. Worst thing would be if they upgraded it and then asked for the product key, imagine how many people would be screwed then!!
I heard all win 7/8 formats will be free, oem, retail, cracked, you get a new product key.
I've not had anything yet with my OEM install of Windows 8.1 - I confirmed that KB3035583 is installed also.
Strange...
Windows enterprise and Windows 8 are excluded I think, a way to push you to upgrade to Windows 8.1 in the interim unless the website I read was poorly worded.
My Windows 7 has just flagged the 10 upgrade to me and I'm cracked using chêw7

If I bought a genuine W8.1 and used the product key, can it only be used once?
Tempted to update, but if it goes tits up I want to be able to reinstall.
Regardless surely a clean install will be best?

So when (if) I get the notification - you can install without formatting (shit loads of stuff on my HD I don't wanna try and get back)?
Upgrade editions
We’ll keep you on like-to-like editions of Windows. For instance, if you are using Windows 7 Home Premium, you’ll upgrade to Windows 10 Home.
Windows 7*
From Edition To Edition Windows 7 Starter Windows 10 Home Windows 7 Home Basic Windows 7 Home Premium Windows 7 Professional Windows 10 Pro Windows 7 Ultimate
Windows 8**
From Edition To Edition Windows Phone 8.1**** Windows 10 Mobile Windows 8.1*** Windows 10 Home Windows 8.1 Pro Windows 10 Pro Windows 8.1 Pro for Students
*Must be running the latest version of Windows 7 (Service Pack 1) to receive the free upgrade to Windows 10 via Windows Update.
**Must be running the latest version of Windows 8 (Windows 8.1 Update) to receive the free upgrade to Windows 10 via Windows Update.
*** Also applies to Windows 8.1 country specific editions, Windows 8.1 Single Language, Windows 8.1 with Bing.
****The availability of Windows 10 upgrade for Windows Phone 8.1 devices may vary by OEM, mobile operator or carrier.
“N” and “KN” editions follow the upgrade path of the parent edition (e.g., Windows 7 Professional N upgrades to Windows 10 Pro).
Some editions are excluded: Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to Windows 10 enterprise offerings outside of this offer.
also By default, Windows 10 builds are pre-keyed, meaning, you do not have to enter a product key and should not be prompted to enter one even after Windows 10 has completed setup.
just remembered im running mstoolkit activated win7 best leave it until final info on cracked copies as heard that was china only
In an update posted to the Windows blog on May 15, Microsoft’s Terry Myerson wrote that the company will be releasing a “very attractive” Windows 10 upgrade offer to those running older devices in a “non-genuine” state. However, Myerson specified that a free upgrade will not be available on non-genuine Windows devices. He would not provide any more specifics at this point in time.
