    Default any airgunners out there?

ive just found out an old friend is a groundsman at an 850 acre site right next to my house and has given me permission to shoot on the land so i have just ordered myself a hatsan AT44-10 PCP rifle kit.
will be used for pest control.
he said that they regularly shoot larger pests on the site and use full FAC weapons. i may end up going for my FAC and getting myself a centerfire of some description.

    any other shooters out there?

Used to be into it, I always found the gas/multi load rifles never worked very well always got stuck and to be honest once you shot one rabbit you would have to wait for the others settle down again. Like the trick question 10 crows on a line you shoot 1 how many left? NONE as they all bugger off.

So always went for the hand cocked ones .177/.22 not really that much difference unless shooting over quite a long range

Get some great pellets cheap of ebay for your rifle tho I think I used the plastic edged ones ;-)

use to go shooting every weekend with an air rifle, had a few over the years even tuned a few myself to my favourite was a weihrauch hw 35 export which i had for 11 yrs.
I even remember when they closed the local park to the public as they had a problem with grey squirrels and they would give you 75p a tail [early 80s ]

the latest PCP rifles are so good now, with a moderator fitted they are so quiet that the hammer hitting the gas release pin is louder than the discharge from the barrel (even that is quietened by fitting a felt pad) couple that with NO recoil and the ability to put a pellet on top of another at 40yds they are a true winner now.

also, most PCP rifles are tuned down to sub 12ftlb for uk laws and on production of an FAC the parts are very cheaply and easily obtained to bring them up to at least double that - my hatsan is rated at 42ftlb in the US.

Shooter here, got myself a bsa ultra a couple of years back for my first pcp, had a lot of fun with it

Got a few crosmans, pistol and ratcatcher which I'm always tinkering with, tinker with it far more then use it though

well, picked up my gun yesterday from the RFD.
spent 20mins zeroing the scope then had a real play with it - 20 pellets at 25yds all within the area of a 2p coin
the second shot i thought was a total miss until i realised i had put the pellet right on top of the other one

Theoben rapid mk2. Used to use it for vermin (rats mainly round chickens) or rough shooting - rabbits, pigeons (wood for eating feral as pest control) and the odd pheasant when I got the chance. Live in the city now so don't get the chance which is a shame.

For pest (rats, pigeons etc) under 40m I wouldn't go fac. Fac for longer distance or .22 rifle for foxes etc, if you're looking at deer there's minimum power (yes min not max) requirements and I think I varies on species.

    Hey guys,

I need some advice. I have got a severe squirrel problem. The majority of our newly planted plants have been dug up, fruit on our fruit trees has been destroyed. The most squirrels I have seen in the garden at any one time is 4.

Can I legally kill them with a BB gun? If the answer is yes, what can I get with a budget of £50? I found this on Amazon but i'm not sure if it will be powerful enough.

BTW I’ve tried sprays, chilli flakes and I don’t want to place traps as we’ve got a kitten who seems to get everywhere.

You need to use an air rifle with a muzzle energy close to the legal limit which is 12ft/lbs - be very careful buying second hand as if you get one over the limit then it's classed as a firearm if you get caught with it.

You can only shoot grey squirrel as vermin not red ones.

You must ensure the pellet cannot leave the boundaries of your property - also consider the possibility of neighbours calling the cops if they see you in your garden taking pot shots.

That's just a few of the really important things

There's a lot to do to keep yourself legal - I'd suggest you have a look on the BASC website - they have a lot of useful info and code of conduct advice for airgunners

I had one of these just for pissing about but will take down squirrels/pigeons no problem. Scope with it is a bit shit and I'd def recommend a suppressor as without its loud (louder than my full power theoben with suppressor) but really suprisingly loud.

Also nice and small so discrete in garden. Don't use pointed pellets and it's worth paying a touch more for decent pellets, you'll get a far better grouping/likely kill.

    well, that escalated quickly!
gun cabinet installed, yukon photon xt night vision scope fitted to air rifle, FAC applied for, .17hmr + .22lr + full power kit for air rifle on wish list at RFD.

spent many a happy hour bunny bashing at my permission, just frustrated at the lack of range from my sub 12ftlb air rifle - i swear the little buggers sit out of range taunting me!
just wait till i get my FAC!

Just be careful with the 22LR they are very very prone to ricochet

    yeah, i have used them.
i just like the fact they are quieter than the .17hmr and the rounds are half the price, i would be using the .22lr for midrange and the .17hmr for longer range stuff.

i think i will be making more use of the .17hmr TBH, i get a real buzz from getting a clean headshot on a bunny at 100+ yards

Have fun, and kiss goodbye to your money from now on - the calibres just get bigger and then you start reloading your own ammo...............

    Hi
I only use to shoot rats off the birdtable at the bottom of the garden and in the hedgerow. at the bottom of the garden with a truly shit cheap .22 air rifle, but have stopped due to its inability to make a clean humane kill. I really really want a Weihrauch HW97k, preferable wood stock with thumb hole but sooooo much money.
    thanks

just a bit of an update,
FAC and SGC arrived late last week, picked up a used CZ452 .22lr with scope, SAK moderator, 400 rounds of winchester hollow point ammunition on sunday and this afternoon i picked up a brand new CZ452 varmint barrel .17hmr and 100 rounds of ballistic tipped ammunition.
going up the range tomorrow evening to zero in the scopes
